     Theodor Seuss Geisel, or "Dr. Seuss", was 

born in 1904 on Howard Street in Springfield, 

Massachusetts, to Theodor Robert and 

Henrietta (Seuss) Geisel. Geisel's father was a 

brewmaster and he credited his mother for his 

ability to create the rhymes that made him 

famous.

     Geisel attended Dartmouth College. While 

he was at Dartmouth, he became editor-in-

chief of Dartmouth’s humor magazine, Jack-O-

Lantern. Geisel first began using the 

pseudonym “Seuss”, his middle name and his 

mother's maiden name, when he contributed 

to the Dartmouth magazine.

     Geisel went to Oxford University in England 

after graduation to please his father. Oxford 

introduced him to meet a classmate, Helen 

Palmer, who later became his first wife and 

children’s author and book editor. Geisel 

became bored of his academic studies so he 

decided to tour Europe instead.

     After returning to the United States from 

Europe, Geisel began working as a cartoonist 

and his pieces were published in The Saturday 

Evening Post and other publications. But for 

more than 15 years, Seuss spent most of his 

time creating advertising campaigns for 

Standard Oil.
