Down in the south, there was once was a little boy who lived with his
grandmother Clementine.
They lived in a small farm and kept an old horse in their field.
They were both very happy.
Grandmother Clementine enjoyed spending time with her grandson because
he was very cheerful.
The little boy loved his grandmother as she always had an answer to all of
his curious questions.

One day on his way to the local
market,
the little boy heard some children
mocking him.
"Oh, look at that that ugly boy!
Get back to your mud hole, you pig!"
The little boy was so ashamed and
didn't want to go out anymore.
After that, all he wanted to do is stay
home.

The little boy started to become less and less cheerful.
Grandmother Clementine had no idea of how she can cheer him up.
But after some hard thinking she had the perfect plan.

Early one day,
Grandma Clementine sat the little boy on the
horse and they set off for the local market.
The sun was already high in the sky when
they arrived.
On their way to the market, people stared.
"Look!" they said. "Look at the boy!
He is sitting on the horse while the old
woman has to walk. Shame on him!"
The little boy wanted to get down so people
would stop talking.
But Grandmaother Clementine didn't let him
and they went back home.

Early the next day,
Grandmother Clementine said to the little boy,
"We're going back to the market but one difference,
I'll ride on the horse and you guide him."
The sun was already high in the sky when they arrived.
On their way through the market, people stared.
"Look!" they said. "Look at that woman!
She is sitting on the horse and
makes the poor boy walk.
Shame on her!"
The little boy wanted to switch places with
Grandmother Clementine so the people would
stop talking.
But she didn't let him and they went home.

That very same afternoon when they got back to their farm,
Grandmother Clementine thanked the horse and
sat by her chair on the deck.
The little boy joined her and said, "Grandma, I finally get what you have been
trying to show me.
I see now that people will always have a problem with whatever I do. So from
now on, I won't let the judgment of others affect me.

On the third day,
the sun was already high in the sky when the little
boy
and Grandmother Clementine arrived at the market.
They walked, laughing as they went.

This time, neither of them rode on the horse.
People were watching but nobody said
anything.
The little boy then shouted "We know we
can't please you, so we'll do what is best for
us!"
