Fossil Fuels are non-renewable energy sources
that were formed hundreds of millions of years
ago, even before there were any dinosaurs.
That's where the name fossil fuel comes from.
There are three major types of fossil fuels: oil,
coal and natural gas.

OIL
People dig deep underground between layers
of rock to get oil. They use oil wells like you
see in the picture. After they pump the oil out
from the ground with the wells they ship it out
in large tankers to oil refineries where it is
changed into fuel and electricity.

Coal
You have to mine to get coal. In the picture
you see piles and piles of it but maybe
some of you have seen a lump or two in
your Christmas stocking :) Trains are used
to move the coal to power plants where it
us burned and turned into steam. The
steam will be used to produce electricity.

Natural Gas
Underground, near oil you can find natural
gas. It is pumped out and sent to large
pipelines. Since gas is odorless (doesn't
smell) they mix it with a chemical that
makes it smell like rotten eggs. It may
smell gross but it makes it safe.

I'm sure many of you have heard the term
fossil fuels before but don't really know
much about it. You see when plants and
animals die their bodies decompose under
layers and layers of earth for millions of
years. Later those same plants and animals
turn into fossil fuels.
