The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek sun-god Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes, on the Greek island of the same name, by Chares of Lindos in 280 BC. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it was constructed to celebrate the successful defence of Rhodes city against an attack by Demetrius Poliorcetes, who had besieged it for a year with a large army and navy.

February 10, 1947: A peace treaty is signed in Paris between the Allied and Allied Powers (and Greece) and Italy, according to which Italy cedes full sovereignty to Greece over the islands of the Dodecanese and adjacent islets.
Αnd this is a picture in the town hall of Rhodes from the day of the incorporation of the Dodecanese islands (1947)
From 620 Rhodes had received raids from Persians and Arabs trying to conquer the city, but on 1097 Crusaders march to the East and ships from all over the Europe approach Rhodes. In 1225 when Constantinople is occupied by the Franks, Rhodes becomes an independent from Leo Gavalas. From 1250 Rhodes nominally belonged to the Byzantine Empire, but in reality it was ruled by various Greek, Venetian and Genoese rulers. In 1306 Crusaders attacked Rhodes with their leader being the Great Magister and claimed a big part of the island except the city of Rhodes. Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologo sent reinforcements,
which allowed the city to repel the initial attacks
of the Knights and hold out, but the city was
captured on August 15, 1310.
