Once upon a time, there was a bright and well-read young lady called Elisabeth Bennet. She lived in Hartfordshire, England, along with her mother, father and 4 sisters. Her best friend was her older sister, beautiful and kind Jane.
None of the sisters was married and their mother was beginning to feel worried. She thought that the best for a young girl is to
find a rich husband in order to be happy.
But Elisabeth felt quite differently and she prefered to fall in love.

One day, news arrived in the neighbourhood that a young SINGLE gentleman was moving to a big house nearby for the summer. Oh the happiness for all the mammas in the area!

The gentleman, the jolly and handsome Mr. Bingley, soon arrived along with his sister and a friend, the even richer and equally SINGLE Mr. Darcy.
Soon, Mr. Bingley organised a big party and invited the whole neighbourhood to meet them. Everyone was really excited!
They all wore their best clothes and went.
The 5 sisters were really happy to go and Jane, being so charming, immediately caught the eye of Mr. Bingley, who couldn't wait to dance with her!
Everyone understood they liked each other and Elisabeth was very happy for her sister. But, what about Mr. Darcy?
What was he like?

Mr. Darcy didn't seem very keen to dance, nor to chat, nor to meet anyone either. He looked haughty and only talked to his friend's sister. Everyone thought he was a snob!
His friend noticed and advised him to dance with Elisabeth. But Mr. Darcy felt pressed and refused, adding that Elisabeth was not pretty enough for him.
Elisabeth unfortunately overheard and she was furious! How dare this man scorn her like that?
He definitely was the most obnoxious man she had ever met!

But Mr. Darcy was now starting to notice Elisabeth for the first time and in the following weeks, as Jane's flirt with Mr. Bingley went on, he realised she was smart, well-educated, quick-witted and beautiful. He started to like her but she had already decided: he was too proud and snobbish for her!
Things became worse when she met another young man, a soldier called Mr. Wickham. He was all that Darcy was not: polite, sociable, charming...
Elisabeth really liked him. Could he be the one?

Then, Wickham revealed that he could not marry her. He was poor and had no prospects. And the person responsible for that was Mr. Darcy himself! He was the one to disobey his father's orders and cut off his will Mr. Wickham, who had been a favourite of the late Mr. Darcy Senior. Now, Elisabeth disliked him even more! But this was not the end. More bad news were to come her way.
