The United States became worried that Russia would make more advancements. 

Therefore a Space race was created during the Cold War. Russia and The United States competed to prove how smart they were to manage to put a human in space. 

On October 4th 1957 Russia launched the first ever man-made satellite to orbit earth.  It was called Sputnik. 

The United States was finally able to achieve the first spaceflight on July 20 of 1969. This spaceflight was called Apollo 11, the famous trip to the moon. 

Neil Armstrong,Edwin Aldrin, Micheal Collins (pilot), were the first humans to ever land on the moon this trip took 8 days. Neil Armstrong was the first person to ever set foot on the moon.  His famous quote is ¨  One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.¨    They also placed an American flag on the moon.
