Hi, my name is Kitchi and I am a 9 year old Algonquin Native American Indian. My family and I belong to the Mohican tribe, we live along the banks of the Hudson River.

This is my mom Cheyenne. Mommy is a farmer and takes care of me and my little sister Mika. Mommy grows corn, beans, and squash in the garden and makes the best dinners with them.

It is so important that mom grows and harvests corn, beans and squash. When these crops are planted together, they work together to grow together!

These three crops are known as the
Three Sisters!
Corn is known to be the oldest sister who provides support. I love corn!

This is my Dad Lakota. Dad is a hunter and a fisher. Dad uses his bows and arrows to hunt deer, moose, and turkey. He also uses his spears and nets to go fishing in the river.

We use Dad's elk and deer hides to make most of our warm clothing. I wear breechcloths and leggings while Mika and the girls wear dresses or skirts with leggings. We all wear moccasins on our feet and braids in our hair.

In the summer my village is along the banks of the Hudson River which is a perfect location for gathering food and water. It is so great we live near the river, because the adults in my tribe go in canoes to travel throughout the river. Using the canoe helps them use their bow and arrow and spear to fish for many fishes!
My Mohican village is palisaded which means that we are surrounded by a log wall for protection. Within our village, we have council hall, a sweat lodge, and our family dwellings, called Wigwams.
In the winter, when the river is frozen we move and settle in the forest. We are nomadic, so we have no permanent homes, we move when we need to and build our own homes.

In our village, we build our Wigwams. They are dome-shaped houses made of bent saplings covered with hides or barks. Only one family can live in each Wigwam.

Some of our neighbors live in longhouses which are much bigger than my Wigwam. Longhouses are rectangular and their roofs are curved and covered with bark. They have smoke holes to let smoke escape and several families can live in a longhouse. Each family gets their own section in the longhouse.

Me and the other Algonquin kids get to play with each other, go to school, and help around the house. Sometimes we have more chores to do, and less time to play. When we have time to play, Mika likes to make corn husk dolls, well I like to play a wooden hand held game.
