The ABC's of Bottlenose Dolphin

Unlike fish the bottlenose dolphin must go
to the surface to breath in air.

The hole located on top of the dolphins head is
called the blowhole. The bottlenose dolphin
breaths in air from its blowhole.

A young bottlenose dolphin is called a calf, a
female is called a cow and a male is called a
bull.

Bottlenose dolphin typically dive from 10-
150 feet deep but they are known to dive as
deep as 2,000 feet.

Dolphins use echolocation to
track food and communicate with
each other.

Each lobe of a dolphin's tail is called a fluke.
Flukes are flattened pads of tough, dense
tissues.

Bottlenose dolphin are usually gray in color. The
coloring goes from a dark gray on the upper body
to a lighter gray on the bottom part of their belly.

Dolphins have a thick layer of blubber or
hypodermis, which helps them maintain their
body heat and protect them from predators.

Bottlenose dolphins are believed to be very
intelligent compared to other animals. They are
fast learners and can understand human
commands.

The bottlenose dolphin can jump or breach
up to 20 feet out of the water.

These dolphin can grow to weigh as much
as 500 kilograms or 1,000 pounds.

The bottlenose dolphin can range in length
from 6 feet to 13 feet long.

The melon is the rounded part of the dolphin's
forehead. It contains fat and plays an important
role in echolocation.

Mother bottlenose dolphin nurse their calves for up
to two years before the calf is weaned off.

Bottlenose dolphins are found in oceans and other
warm waters around the globe. Most species live in
shallow waters with tropical temperatures.

These animals live in groups called pods. The
size of a pod can range from five to several
hundred dolphin.

The bottlenose dolphin eats large quantities
of fish. On average an adult dolphin will eat
15- 30 pounds of fish per day.

A dolphin's skin is smooth and feels rubbery.
The skin has no hair or sweat glands.

These sleek swimmers can reach speeds
of over 18 miles an hour.
