A story about the expansion
of Ancient China and Ancient Rome 
and how that impacts 
our lives today.2
Background InformationMy name is Robert and I, along with my
colleagues, John, Eric, and Maya, are
discussing the impact that the expansion of
Ancient China and Ancient Rome have on us
today. Our goal is to find enough research for
a children's book by 5:00 pm tonight. It is
11:00 am right now. We are in small
conference room on the 66th floor of the New
Empire State Building with four superpower
laptops and four very smart historians.

Chapter 1: Cities The cities of both civilizations have a great impact on our lives. In Ancient
Rome, the cities had walls around them.
The purpose of the walls was to protect
the city. The walls slowed down enemies
from conquering all of the land. They
also protected the citizens so there would
be more of them available to be soldiers

to expand and protect their lands.5
In Ancient China, many of the citieshad farms. This is important to the
expansion of Ancient China because the
farms provided food for the citizens. The
food nourished the people of Ancient
China. This kept the people alive. That
was crucial because with more people
alive, more people could have jobs to
help expand their territory.

Both of the civilization's cities kept its citizens alive. With many healthy
citizens, both civilizations could thrive
in expanding their territory.
Walls and farms impact our lives
greatly. There are walls all around us,
including our houses. They are there for
protection. The walls protect everything
on the inside of the house from
everything on the outside of the house.

The farms impact our lives because they have a product that keeps us alive. Most
of our food comes from farms. Farms
have evolved from a basic farm with
several species of plants to farms with
thousands of acres of farmland with
thousands of species of plants.

Chapter 2: Government Government played a big role in the expansion of Ancient Rome and Ancient
China. In Rome, the type of government
that led to the biggest expansion of
territory was a democracy. A democracy
is a government in which citizens have
the right to vote and elect their officials.
The majority of the votes toward a person

meant that the person won the election. This led to expansion because the
favored leaders made military decisions
that most of the population agreed with.
The the army attacked the new lands
accordingly.
In Ancient China, the type of
government that led to the greatest
expansion was a monarchy. The Han
Dynasty had many rulers that expanded

the territory. Both civilizations had great
rulers that made smart military decisions
to expand their territory. The democracy
impacts our lives because our government
is a democracy. We have the right to vote
and elect our officials. The monarchy
effects our lives today because we learned
that a monarchy is not the most effective
type of government in today's times.

Chapter 3: Religion Religion also had something to do with the expansion of Ancient Rome and
Ancient China. The religion of the people
of Ancient Rome revolved around Gods
and Goddesses. In total, there were 22
Roman Gods and Goddesses. This helped
Rome expand their territory because
the citizens would pray to them to win

the war and for good luck. The citizenswould also make animal sacrifices and
perform other actions to honor the deities.
In Ancient China, the main religion
was Buddhism. Buddhism helped to
expand China's territory because of the
influence of the people traveling along the
silk road. Many people using the Silk
road practiced Buddhism. They spread

the religion to other countries while ontheir journeys. When a Han person
practices Buddhism and travels
along the silk road, they spread the
religion, along with their culture. Thus,
expanding their territory by converting
more people to practice Buddhism and
to follow the Han culture.

There is not a true similarity betweenthe religion of the people of Ancient
Rome and the Han people.
The Gods and Goddesses impact our
lives today because many religions like
Judaism and Christianity that have one
God or many Gods. Buddhism affects
our lives today because about 6% of the
world practices Buddhism.

Chapter 4: Job Specialization Job specialization was crucial duringthe expansion of these two civilizations.
In Ancient Rome and in Ancient China,
the most important job to help in
expanding territory was a soldier.The
soldiers would fight other civilizations
to gain resources, money, and land.
The soldiers impact our lives today

because most countries have an army with many soldiers. Soldiers are still
trying to capture land everyday.

Chapter 5: Social Classes Social class is what forms a society.Where people belong in the social class
system is crucial to the survival of a
civilization. In Ancient Rome, soldiers
were in the middle of the social class.
They were above slaves but below people
who had a lot of power. This caused
expansion because the soldiers felt like
