The World Without Simple
Machines
A Great Adventure with Simple Machines

What was the world like before simple
machines? Simple machines are machines
that have few moving parts, to make work
easier. Without simple machines, the world
would be a disaster.
A long time ago, there was a group of simple
machines. There was Larry the Lever, Paul the
Pulley, Izzy the Inclined Plane, Walt the
Wedge, Sammy the Screw, George the Gear,
Wally the Wheel, and Alex the Axle.

Unfortunately, these simple machines didn't
know what they could do! Larry the Lever can
lift up heavy objects. Paul the Pulley can lift up
objects using a rope. Izzy the Inclined makes it
easier for large, heavy objects to move up or
down… like a ramp. Walt the Wedge can break
through almost anything! Sammy the Screw can
help put large projects together. George the
Gear helps electronic things work. Wally the
Wheel and Alex the Axle help things with wheels
move.

There was a factory worker named John, who
produced flags. John kept seeing all these
weird things. When he got in his car after
work, the radio said that some new objects
were discovered. (they were simple machines!)

“Ouch! It feels like rope burn!”
Paul the Pulley exclaimed.
“Make it stop!”
“Hey, boss, did you hear that?
“Hear what?” John’s boss
asked.
“That noise it sounded like a
scream.”
“John, go home. You’re not
making any sense and you seem
very tired. Try going to your
doctor.”
“Thank you so much, boss.”
John said with a hint of regret in
his voice.

When John got home, he
went straight to bed. After
the boss locked up, Paul let
out a muffled scream.
“Hellllllppppppp!”
“What was that?” Izzy the
Inclined Plane asked.
“Yeah, I heard it, too.”
Sammy the Screw whispered
“It’s okay, it’s just Paul!”
Larry the Lever said wisely.
“Thanks Larry, you always
clear it up.” George the Gear
said shyly.
