The Setting:
The story happened on Prince Edward Island in a village called Avonlea. The story was written in 1905 so it describes life at that time. Anne lives with a family on their farm which is near the woods and away from other houses in the village.
What changes does the main character go through?
Anne goes through big changes. Her parents died when she was young and their cleaning woman took her in to help with the woman's eight children. The family wasn't nice to Anne. When the husband died, she went to work for another family with a lot of kids. Finally, when she was ten years old, she went to live in an orphanage. After a lot of years of living there a family decied to adopet a boy but the orphanage sent them Anne, by mistake. Luckily, they liked her and she started a new and happier life with them.
Describe the character that you liked the most.
The character that I liked the most was Diana, Anne's best friend, because she was kind and beautiful. One day, Diana's mom told her that she couldn't be friends with Anne anymore. Anne gave Diana what she thought was raspberry juice, but it was really wine. Diana drank three cups of it and got very sick. However, the two girls kept on sending letters to each other. Then, one day, Diana asked Anne for help because her littile sister was sick. Anne helped the girl feel better and when Diana's mom learned what happened, she told Diana that they could be friends again.
Describe the character that you liked the least.
The character that I liked the least was Mrs.Lynde because she always wanted to know everybody else's business. She talked about people behinde their backs and when she saw Anne for the first time, she was so mean to her. She told Anne that her hair was as red as carrots. This made Anne angry and she shouted at Mrs. Lynde. After many days, though, she went to Mrs.Lymde's house and she apologized. Mrs. Lynde still wasn't very nice to Anne and that's why I didn't like her character very much.
If Anne lived next door to you, do you think you would be friends? Why or why not?
Yes, I think that we would be friends because we both get angry so fast and also she is such a good friend. She hekped her best friend Diana when Diana's littile sister was sick. Anne is not the kind of girl who thinks that she is the best in everything and that everyone else is a loser. I also think she is funny and if we be friends it will be goof because we could laugh a lot together.
What was your favorite part of the book and why?
My favorite part of the book was when Anne volunteered to help take care of Diana's sick little sister. Anne learned how to take good care of children from the time before she lived in Green Gables. Diana was really worried, but Anne knew exactly what to do. She was so smart and not even scared at all. In the end, Diana's sister did get better. I like reading about girls who are smart and brave because I want to be like that, too.
How did you feel about the ending of the story and why did you feel that way?
I think that the ending was great because Anne's enemy, Gilbert, did something really nice for her. He knew that Marillia was sick and Anne wanted to be close to her, but the teaching job she got was far away from Green Gables. Gilbert had a teaching job in Avonlea - very close to the farm. He gave his job to Anne and they finally became good friends instead of enemies. This was a wonderful ending.
If you could make one change to the story, what would it be and why would you make this change?
I didn't like how Matthew died and Marilla got so sick. That part made me very sad because Anne had to change her plans to help Marilla keep the farm. I would change this detail and not have Matthew die when Anne was still a young adult. She could teach at the school she wanted to, even though it was farther away. Anne had a lot of hard times in her life. She didn't need to have more.
