Carl can't wait for lunch time. "Ten more minutes until lunch" his teacher Ms. Terry says. He begins to think about his pizza.

But suddenly Carl feels something. The floor begins to shake! "AHHH" Carl begins to scream. "Class, stay calm there is an earthquake taking place, please stop, drop and take cover."

Carl thinks back to a lesson Ms. Terry taught. "Vancouver sits on the Cascadia subduction zone. In simple words this means we are in an area that is at high risk to experience earthquakes." Said Ms. Terry.

"There are around 300 earthquakes a year in our region." Ms. Terry continues. "Although most of these earthquakes we will not feel. If there is an earthquake that we feel, it is important we are all prepared. I want you to all remember these 4 words." Ms. Terry pointed to the board with the words stop, drop, cover and hold.

Stop, Drop, Cover and Hold.

"First we will stop what we are doing, do not clean up or pack your stuff up. Next, move to the nearest desk and drop to the floor. Once you are on the floor, get onto your elbows and knees and make sure your head is under the desk, grab on to the leg of the desk and hold tight. You will stay there until the shaking stops, then look to me for instructions on what to next. The shaking can last for a couple seconds or minutes" Ms. Terry explains.

"I want us to all practice this now." Ms. Terry states. "When I say rumble rumble, follow my previous instructions, for now resume your worksheet." Carl gets out his pencil case and begins to write. A few minutes pass and Carl hears Ms. Terry call out "Rumble, rumble."

RUMBLE RUMBLE!
Everyone begins scurrying to the floor, taking position and holding on. "Very good class!" Ms. Terry says. "You can return to your seats, does anyone have any questions?" Many hands go flying into the air. "Yes Greg?" Ms. Terry asks. "What are earthquakes caused by?" Greg exclaims.
