Hi, I'm Savannah, I'm going to take you on an adventure to learn about the different religions all around the world!

We are going to talk to the founders, leaders and other religious figures from each religion to find our answers.

First, we are going to talk to an Elder from a First Nations community.
With the snap of my fingers, we are going to be on the shores of Lake Ontario in an Iroquois community. Let's go!

First Nations

Hi! Can you teach us about your religion?
Oh Hello, yes of course. I can teach you about Iroquois First Nations but there are many stories about different First Nations peoples.

What is God?
Iroquois believe in Orenda. Orenda attaches itself to objects or animals. God is different between traditions but all First Nations people believe that energy comes from a common source.

How was the world created?
We tell the story of turtle island... It begins with The Creator cleansing the world of everything by flooding it. A few animals survived including a muskrat, turtle and a supernatural being called Nanabush. The muskrat dove into the water and gathered soil and Nanabush put the soil on the turtles back. That became known as Turtle Island, the centre of creation.

What happens when you pass away?
Most First Nations believe in rebirth of some sort. Iroquois belief is very simple, we believe that our souls enter man made objects.
There is no set time of beginning and no founder of the world. Our religion counts on memories of people who are given teachings from Elders. I am an Elder. We are respected for our wisdom and understanding of the beliefs and traditions inside our religion.
How and when did your religion start?

What are some of your teachings?
The main teachings are the 3 central beliefs. Do Not Interfere meaning lead by example, Community is Important meaning take care of it, and Everything is Shared meaning only take was is needed.
The shared teaching among all First Nations people are the 7 Grandfather Teachings. The Eagle showing love, The Buffalo, respect, The Bear, courage, Sabe, honesty, The Beaver, wisdom, The Wold, humility, and The Turtle, truth.

What are some of your traditions?
The Powwow and The Shaking Tent are our main traditions. The Powwow is a whole community celebration that includes lots of dancing and singing. The Shaking Tent is a ritual that takes place at night in a small circular tent. Its purpose is to communicate with spirits to ask questions, find objects or people, and solve problems.

Hello, it is lovely to meet you. I would be honoured to. What do you want to know?

What is God?
Our Gods are called deities and there is an infinite number of them. Every god and goddess is part of the same ultimate reality called Brahman.

How was the world created?
Everything in the universe came from Brahman.

What happens when we pass away?
Your soul called Atman is rebirthed into a different being. Can be a human, animal or plant.

How and when did Hinduism start?
Hinduism is a mix of many cultures that started over 4000 years ago. It has no founder and doesn't have a strong structure behind it.
What are some traditions and teachings?

The main teaching is karma, which is the good deeds that you do in your life that determine the situation you are put into in your next life. There is also the caste system within Hinduism. This system divides society into groups that make up everything in your life.

The ultimate goal for Hindus is to achieve Moksha. Moksha is the freeing from samsara which is the cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth. Once you reach moksha your soul is returned to Brahman.

The main texts are the Vedas which include, hymns, instructions on how to do sacrifices, songs, prayers and the concepts of Bhraman, atman, karma, samsara and moksha.
How do Hindus worship?

Hindu worship of their deities is called Puja. Puja includes chanting, prayer, bowing, images of deities, and offerings. It requires you to remove your shoes and wash your hands before.

It was my pleasure.

Buddhism
We are going to meet with a Buddhist monk to learn about Buddhism.

Hi! Can you teach us about Buddhism?

Yes of course. What do you want to learn?

What is God?
We don't have a God or an ultimate creator. We worship the Buddha and follow his teachings.

What happens when we pass away?
When a Buddhist dies our death leads to a new life and the positives from our life pass into our next life.

How did Buddhism start?
Buddha was born a Hindu and lived a life of luxury until he felt he wasn't fulfilled so he left his castle and found himself living in self-denial for 6 years until he almost died. He discovered the middle way which is living in between the two extremes.

The Buddha meditated under a tree for 49 days. During this, he saw his past lives and the lives of every other living being. He attained enlightenment called Nirvana and became The Buddha. He found five followers and gave His first teachings to them. That is where Buddhism started.

What are some of the Buddha's teachings?
The main teachings are The Four Nobel Truths and the Eightfold Path. Truth one; life is filled with suffering, truth two; the cause of suffering is desire, truth three; suffering ends when you stop desiring, truth four; The Path to the end of suffering is the Eightfold Path.

The Eightfold Path is the right view; to see things for what they really are, right thought; commitment to mental self-improvement, right speech; using kind words, right conduct; following the five precepts, right livelihood; earning a living morally, right effort; strive for goof thoughts, right mindfulness; being aware of what you're thinking an doing, right concentration; focusing on wholesome thoughts.

The precepts say to stay away from harming living beings, stealing, and lying.

What are some of your traditions?
Meditation and worship are big parts of Buddhism, Buddhists meditate to free themselves from the past and remove the fear of the future and worship.

Thank you so much for teaching us!
Of course, I enjoyed teaching you!

Hi! Can you teach us about Judaism?
Yes, I would be honoured to. What do you want to learn?
What is God?

God is the creator of everything.

How and who founded Judaism?
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob founded Judaism and their descendants are the Jewish people. Abraham had a vision of God and he told him to move cities and if he did he would make him a great nation. He moved and Judaism was settled.

What are Jewish writings?
The Torah is the main Jewish writing. It is in the Tenakah, the Jewish Bible and it is made up of five books. It contains 613 commandments, teachings and instructions on how to live a faithful life.

What is your place of worship?
Our place of worship is a synagogue and when we gather there it's called a congregation. People wear modest clothing and women and men are separated. I, a Rabbi am the leader of a synagogue.
