• Use at least five characters.

• Use combinations of letters (upper case and lower 

case), numbers, and symbols.

Guidelines for creating a safe password:  

DON’Ts:

• Don’t use any private identity information (name, 

address, email, phone number, social 

security number, mother’s maiden name, birth dates, 

etc.).

• Don’t use a password that is easy to guess, like your 

pet’s name, your nickname, name of your 

school, baseball team, etc.

Do not use your pet turtle's name as your password!

than your parents or a trusted adult.

• Use a different password for every account 

you have online.

• Try to change your password regularly -- 

recommended every six months.

Choosing the same password for each of your 

online accounts is like using the same key 

to lock your home, school locker and bike – if a 

criminal gains access to one, all of them are 

compromised. So don’t use the same password 

for an online newsletter as you do for your 

email or social networking account.

Just like you are a citizen of the United States, when 

you are online, you are an online digital citizen.  

Follow these guidelines to be the best digital citizen 

you can be! 

Be respectful, polite, and considerate to 

anyone you meet. Don’t use anonymity 

to abuse your 

power online.
