KEY DEFINITIONS
JOVIAN PLANET- Giant planets in the outer solar system that are composed primarily of hydrogen and helium gas. The four Jovian planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
TERRESTRIAL PLANETS- A planet that is primarily composed of silicate rocks or metals. In our solar system, the four innermost planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, are terrestrial planets.
The Sun is a hot glowing star. Our entire solar system is held together by the gravity of the Sun. The heat of the sun makes our Earth warm. Without the Sun, there would no longer be life.

Mercury is the first planet in our solar system. It is the closest planet to the sun. This planet is covered with craters. It is considered a terrestrial planet and the smallest planet in our solar system.

Venus is the second planet in our solar system. It is the hottest planet in our solar system. Venus has a thick atmosphere which traps heat making it really hot. This planet Is considered a terrestrial planet.

Earth is the third planet in our solar system. This planet is our home. The Earth's surface is covered by 70% water. Earth also has oxygen, which helps us breathe. This planet is considered a terrestrial planet.

Mars is the fourth planet in our solar system. Its atmosphere is composed of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon. Also, it atmosphere is extremely thin! Mars is considered a terrestrial planet just like Earth!

Jupiter is considered the fifth planet and the biggest planet in our solar system! This planet does not have a solid surface, and it's composed of a giant gas. The Great Red Spot is located in Jupiter, which is a storm! This planet is considered a Jovian Planet.

Saturn is sixth planet in our solar system. This planet is my favorite planet. Saturn is composed of hydrogen and helium. This planet has a ring that is made up of chunks of ice and rock. Just like Jupiter, Saturn is considered a Jovian planet!

Uranus is the seventh planet in the solar system. It is made of hydrogen, helium, and methane. Methane makes this planet blue. This planet is considered a giant ice and a Jovian planet.

Neptune is the last planets in our solar system. Like Uranus, Neptune also gets its color from methane. Neptune is the farthest from the sun making it the coldest and darkest planet in our system. This planet is considered a Jovian planet.
