The solar system is made up of the sun and everything that orbits (travel's around) it. A few of the things that orbit the sun are eight planets, their moons, asteroids, comets, and other small icy objects. With all these things in the solar system, it is largely filled with empty space.

Let's go meet our solar system.
Our first stop will be the SUN, it is literally the center of the solar system. Everything revolves around this giant star. It is the largest object in our solar system. The sun gives off Radiation (energy). This energy is needed on the earth for heat and light.

With temperatures reaching up to 27million degrees Fahrenheit, it is just way too hot for this tourist to handle!
MERCURY is the closest planet to the sun.
Although it is the smallest planet in the solar system, it is quite heavy because its core is made up of iron. It takes MERCURY 88 earth days to orbit the sun. A day in MERCURY, or a rotation takes 59 earth days.

Mercury only sees the sun rise every 180 days. Nobody has time for that, let's move on to the next planet in our journey.
VENUS is the second planet from the sun. It is a little larger than EARTH. It takes 225 earth days for this planet to orbit around the sun. VENUS is also a planet that has a day that last longer than its year.

Venus has more than 1,600 volcanos on it's surface. Nobody could ever "LAVA" here!!!

EARTH is the third planet from the sun. EARTH is the only planet in the solar system that has life. It is the fifth largest planet. It takes 365.25 days to orbit the SUN. It takes 24 hours to make one rotation on its axis.

The EARTH has one natural Satellite (an object in space that orbits a larger object in space), called the moon.

HOME SWEET HOME
MARS is the fourth planet from the sun. It is about the same size as the EARTH. MARS takes 687 days to orbit the sun. It takes 24.6 hours to rotate on its
axis.

Mars is the only other planet that could possibly sustain life. Meet my friend Marshall from Mars.

Rovers take pictures and measurments of Mars' surface.
