This story is about a Virginian who changed the world. George Washington was a farmer, a war hero, and the first president of the United States of America. Through leadership and his character, he became the father of his country.

I was born on February 22, 1732, in the British colony of Virginia. When I was 11 years old my father Augustine died, as the oldest of 6 children I was left to help manage my family’s plantation. It was here that I learned the importance of hard work and efficiency.

Growing up, my education was very important to me. I had private tutors that came to my house until I finished my formal schooling at 15. I never attended college but became a successful surveyor and was able to acquire my own land.

5
In 1752, I became the commander of the Virginia militia with no military experience. I became internationally known by the time I was 22 for my efforts during the French and Indian war. In 1755, I aided General Edward Braddock and was given command of Virginia's entire military force.

6
In 1758, the British took the forks of the Ohio, river. I returned home to Mount Vernon and resigned my commission as peace had been restored in Virginia.

7
Upon my arrival home, I Married Martha Dandridge Custis and became a stepfather to her 2 children. I expanded my farm and grew a variety of crops, maintained fruit orchards, and a successful fishery. I was also elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses where I served until 1774.

8
By the late 1760s, I felt firsthand the negative effects of the British imposing rising taxes on American colonists. I believed it was in the best interest of the colonists to declare independence.

9
I served as a delegate to the First Continental Congress in 1774 in Philadelphia. The purpose of meeting was to discuss Americas future under the British unacceptable rule. We agreed to an economic boycott and created a list of rights belonging to the colonists.

10
The American revolution started on April 19,1775 which gunfire at Lexington and concord, Massachusetts. Shortly after the second Continental Congress came back to Philadelphia, We became focused on the war effort and I was named the commander and chief of the continental army.

11
Over the 8-year war, we fought hard and with the help of French allies we were able to capture troops at the battle of Yorktown to end the war in 1781. I was declared a national hero through my leadership and motivation to struggling troops during the winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge.

12
The treaty of Paris was signed in 1783 between Great Britain and the United States. I gave up my command of the army and returned home where I planned to resume my life as a farmer.

13
I was asked to attend the Constitutional Convention in 1787 to help draft the new constitution. While there, I was told I was the most qualified person to lead the country.

14
The first presidential election was held on January 7, 1789. I won the presidency, and my vice president was John Adams. My inauguration was on April 30, 1789, and quickly got to work.
