Earth's Systems
3rd Grade Standard: Represent data in tables and graphical displays of typical weather conditions during a particular season to identify patterns and make predictions.
DCI: Weather and Climate Weather, which varies from day to day and seasonally throughout the year, is the condition of the atmosphere at a given place and time. Scientists record patterns of the weather across different times and areas so that they can make predictions about what kind of weather might happen next.
SEP: Analyzing and Interpreting Data- experiences and progresses to introducing quantitative approaches to collecting data and conducting multiple trials of qualitative observations.
CCC: Patterns- patterns of change can be used to make predictions.
NOS: -Scientific Knowledge Assumes an Order and Consistency in Natural Systems
The storybook "Journey with Windy Willow: Seasons, Skies, and Earthly Surprise" connects to the Disciplinary Core Ideas by explaining how weather changes depending on the season and varies throughout the year. It also talks about the different natural disasters that take place during particular seasons, which help us understand patterns and make predictions. My storybook aligns with two Nature of Science tenants, which are science assumes order and consistency in natural systems and science addresses questions about the natural and material world. These Nature of Science tenants align with my storybook by showing that seasons and weather conditions have a natural pattern and order within nature. It also addresses questions about the natural world through learning about how these natural disasters occur and when they are more likely to occur.
Vocabulary:
Floods: When there's too much water and it covers places it's not supposed to, like roads or houses.
Hurricanes: A super strong and big storm with lots of wind and rain that forms over the ocean. It can cause damage when it reaches the land.
Blizzards: A very cold snowstorm with strong winds that can make it hard to see and be outside.
Earthquakes: When the ground shakes because pieces of the Earth's crust are moving. It can make buildings and roads crack.
Tornados: A spinning wind funnel that comes down from the sky and can pick things up and move them. It's very dangerous.
Wildfires: Big fires that spread quickly and can burn trees, grass, and sometimes even houses. It's important to be careful and safe when there's a wildfire.

Chapter 1: The Magic Clock of Seasons
In the heart of Nature Town lived Windy Willow, a playful tree with leaves that changed colors. Windy Willow was unique - her leaves would turn into storybooks, each detailing the mysteries of nature.
"Ready for a year-long journey?" asked Windy Willow to the children of Nature Town. The children eagerly nodded, and the adventure began.
Chapter 2: Sprouting Spring
Windy's leaves turned a fresh green. Raindrops visited, watering her roots.
"In Spring," began Windy, "warmth returns, making ice melt and flowers bloom. But sometimes, these rains become too heavy, leading to floods. A flood occurs when water rises quickly and covers the land."
