A bit about the author............................................................................ 35
Once upon a time, a long, long, time ago, (more like two minutes ago,) Shammy the leprechaun went to visit his two human friends, Pila, and her little brother Dimo. They were in their house decorating for Christmas and setting up sleeping bags in the living room because they were waiting for Santa to come because it was Christmas Eve.
“Hi kids! What are you doing?” Shammy asked.
“Hi Shammy! We are getting ready for Christmas! We think that this might just be the year we see Santa. We are going to sleep in our living room to wait for him!” The kids exclaimed.
“Cool!” Shammy said.
“I can’t wait to see what he will leave us this year!” Dimo exclaimed.
“Remember Dimo, it’s not the presents that make Christmas special, it’s the family,” Pila reminded him.
“I know. It’s still fun to see what we will get though,” Dimo said.
“I agree. I wonder what book Santa will give me this year,” Pila said.
“Did you kids know that us leprechauns know Santa?” Shammy asked.
“Wait- what!” The kids exclaimed.
Just as they said that, a bright candy cane colored letter popped out of nowhere right in front of the kids and Shammy!
“Where did that come from?!” Dimo asked.
“Let’s read the letter and find out,” Shammy said as he opened the letter. “Here’s what the letter says:
Dear any leprechaun that may have found this letter,
This is Santa speaking, or writing (or both if you got an audio book message!). Unfortunately, the elves that I usually work with cannot help me make Christmas magical this year. Can you please help? There is a long list of things that need to be done including, getting the reindeer ready for the long journey around the world, figuring out where in the world I need to go, making toys, wrapping toys, and that is just four things out of 347 things to do! If you are available, please go to the North Pole immediately! My workshop is hidden, but this letter will start to glow when you get close. When you are almost to the hidden door, this letter will use magic to open the door.
Thank you,
Santa
(P.S. If your name is Shammy, please bring your human friends with you. We will need all the help we can get!)"
Shammy read. “How does Santa know my name?”
“We need to go to the North Pole immediately!” Pila exclaimed.
“Just one question, where
is the North Pole?” Dimo asked.
Chapter 2: Who Took the North Pole Off the Map?!
“What do you mean Dimo?” Shammy asked as Pila pulled down a map of the world. “The North Pole is right- where is the North Pole? Who took the North Pole off the map?!” He hopped onto the top of the map to look at it more closely.
The kids laughed.
“No one took the North Pole off the map Shammy!” Dimo giggled.
“Of course! I forgot! The North Pole isn’t a land mass. It is made up of floating ice. In the Summer, some of the ice melts and the ocean rises,” Pila explained.
“Right,” Dimo said. “The North Pole isn’t a continent, but the Arctic Circle is made up of lots of countries and continents! The Arctic Circle includes parts of Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Alaska. The North Pole will not appear on this map because this map only shows continents. ”
“Okay, but how are we going to find Santa? Santa’s letter clearly states that we need to go to the North Pole. But how do we go if the North Pole is not exactly real?” Shammy asked.
“Maybe Santa’s workshop is inside a magical iceberg in the Arctic Ocean?” Pila suggested.
“Let’s look!” Shammy said. He snapped his fingers and POOF! They were off to the Arctic Ocean to find a magical iceberg!
“Brr! It’s freezing here!” Dimo exclaimed. They were floating in the air just above the Arctic Ocean.
“At least it is not as cold as Antarctica,” Pila said, shivering. “The Arctic is the second coldest place on Earth. Antarctica is the first.”
“Here, let me put some bubbles around you so you will be warm,” Shammy said. He snapped his fingers and POP! Magical, warm, green bubbles appeared around them. "I can also make you very warm jackets too." Shammy snapped his fingers again. Now Pila and Dimo had warm jackets on. And Shammy, well, he had magic to keep him warm.
“Look!” Dimo shouted. “There’s an iceberg! Let’s head over to see if Santa’s workshop is inside.”
Shammy used his magic to bring them closer to the iceberg.
“That’s strange. The letter is glowing, but no door is opening on the iceberg,” Shammy said.
“This is only half the iceberg,” Pila said.
“What do you mean?” Shammy asked.
“There is a bigger part of the iceberg under the water,” Dimo explained.
“Maybe to be extra safe, Santa put his door under the freezing cold water of the Arctic Ocean,” Pila said.
“Let’s see,” Shammy said as he used his magic again to slowly lower them under the water.
When they got under, the letter glowed brighter and brighter until BONG! A door in the iceberg opened right in front of Pila, Dimo, and Shammy.
“We found Santa’s workshop!” The kids exclaimed.
“Let’s go in,” Shammy said. He used his magic to take them in and then POP! Their bubbles were gone.
“Whoa!” The kids and Shammy exclaimed. The iceberg was much, much, MUCH bigger on the inside! Everywhere there were leprechauns helping out, making toys, and lining up for Santa to tell them what to do.
“Let’s head over there,” Shammy said, pointing to a line of leprechauns waiting for Santa to tell them what to do.
The kids walked over.
“How is this place bigger on the inside?” Dimo whispered to Pila.
“No idea,” Pila whispered back. “It just isn’t possible for humans!”
The walls were made out of ice and there were some supports made out of candy canes.
Finally, after a forty-five minute wait, it was their turn.
“Ho! Ho! Ho! Who do we have here?” Santa asked when it was their turn. “Of course! It’s Shammy! Thank you so much for coming, and I see you brought your human friends Pila and Dimo to help you just like I asked.”
“How does he know our names?!” the kids asked Shammy.
“I know everyone's names! Now, for your first task. Because you all know so much about animals, I want you to get the reindeer ready for flight.” Santa handed Pila a list of things to do to help get the reindeer ready for flight.
“You got it Santa!” They said, and they set off towards the sign that read ‘Reindeer this way’ with a big red arrow.
“Wow! This is so cool. There is a hidden magical tundra right here in this iceberg!” Pila exclaimed. “And look! It’s snowing!”
“Amazing! It looks just like the habitat that normal reindeer live in,” Dimo noticed.
“Cool!” Shammy exclaimed.
“Okay, here’s the list of things that Santa gave us to do. First, we feed the reindeer. Then, we give them water. While they are drinking, figure out who is going to be leading the reindeer team tonight. Next, hook up all the reindeer except for the lead reindeer. The lead reindeer should be given extra food and water and should have taken a nap so they have the extra energy they will need to lead Santa’s sleigh team tonight. Finally, we go to Santa for another project to work on,” Pila said, reading the list.
“What do reindeer like to eat?” Dimo wondered aloud.
“We reindeer are herbivores. In the winter, we eat lichen because it is what we can find. Sometimes, humans call the lichen reindeer moss. We also like grasses and sedges," a reindeer munching on lichen nearby said. “We mostly eat the same stuff as non-magical reindeer.”
“Wow! They are so magical they even talk!” Dimo whispered to Pila.
“Yeah!” Pila whispered back. She turned to the reindeer and asked “what do you eat before the big journey around the world?”
“Unlike non-magical reindeer, we eat carrots before the big flight. Santa keeps them in that big box labeled carrots,” the reindeer replied, pointing its head in the direction of the box.
“Thanks,” Pila said. She opened the box and found sliced carrots and instructions inside. “One cup per reindeer,” She read.
The friends got to work measuring and scooping the carrots onto the plates in front of the reindeer.
“Okay. Next, the water. Do you know where Santa keeps your water?” Dimo asked a reindeer munching on carrots.
The reindeer swallowed some carrots and said “over there in that big barrel.”
Dimo walked over and found more instructions. “Two cups per reindeer,” Dimo read.
He and Shammy gave the reindeer their water while Pila figured out who was going to lead Santa’s reindeer in flight this year.
“Hi there! You and all your friends look really different from all the reindeer I’ve seen in pictures,” Dimo said.
“Ah, you must have been looking at a white tailed deer. Sometimes people get us all mixed up!”
“Really? Interesting,” Dimo said.
“We finished giving the reindeer their water,” Shammy told Pila.
“Good! I figured out who is going to lead Santa’s reindeer tonight,” Pila told them.
“Really? Who?” Dimo asked.
“Her name is Reina,” Pila replied. “Did you know that all the reindeer here are girls? You can tell because the boys lose their antlers in the fall. The girls keep their antlers until the Spring. All the reindeer here have antlers, so that means that they’re all girls!”
“I did not know that,” Shammy said.
“Okay,” Pila said. “Next, the instructions say to hook up all the reindeer except for the lead reindeer. The lead reindeer should be given extra food and water and should have taken a nap so they have the extra energy they will need to lead Santa’s sleigh team tonight.”
“Okay! Me and Shammy can hook up the reindeer while you give Reina her extra food and water,” Dimo said.
“Okay,” Pila said.
Half an hour later, all the reindeer were hooked up and Reina was given her extra food and water and was asleep on a hay bed.
“Now what do we do?” Shammy whispered to Pila so he wouldn’t wake up Reina.
“Let me check,” Pila whispered back as she read their instructions. “Now we go to Santa for our next task.”
“Hohoho! Perfect! I’m glad you’re done, because I need you to help those leprechauns making toys over there. (They keep stamping shamrocks on the toys!)” Santa said.
“Okay,” the kids and Shammy answered.
“What are we making?” Pila asked.
“Tons of things! We are making things like books, cars, skateboards, fingerboards, shamrock pillows, and rainbow blankets,” a leprechaun sitting right next to them said. “When we’re all done, we like to stamp all the toys with little shamrocks!"
“Shamrock pillows and rainbow blankets? That doesn’t sound like the kind of thing that you would usually find in your stocking!” Pila whispered to Dimo.
“Well, these are leprechauns and not elves!” Dimo whispered back.
“What do you kids want to make?” Shammy asked.
“I will help make the books,” Pila answered as she raced off to join the other leprechaun who was making books.
“I want to make fingerboards, skateboards and cars!” Dimo exclaimed as he grabbed a hammer and followed another leprechaun to the car-making station.
“I guess I will make shamrock pillows and rainbow blankets,” Shammy said as he used his magic to create a rainbow and froze it into a blanket.
“You are really good at writing Christmas books,” the other leprechaun told Pila.
“Thanks, I love writing books!” Pila said.
“How do you come up with your story ideas?” the leprechaun asked.
“I like taking my experiences in life, then adding a little magic to them to write a good story,” Pila explained.
Meanwhile, Dimo was making car and fingerboard toys much more realistic than ANY other leprechaun could have.
“How do you make your cars and skateboards and fingerboards so realistic?” a leprechaun who had introduced himself as Liam asked.
“I LOVE skateboards! And fingerboards! AND cars! I guess I just know what they look like really well so it is easy for me to make them,” Dimo answered.
Shammy, who was sewing shamrocks together and making and freezing rainbows, was doing it much faster than any other leprechaun!
“How do you do that so fast?” the other leprechaun asked.
“My friend Pila showed me how to sew really fast. Also, having human friends probably made my magic faster and stronger because you never know when they might try to capture you!” Shammy said, looking over at Pila.
Shammy ended up making 2,384 rainbow blankets and 790 shamrock pillows, Dimo made 348 cars and 2,374 skateboards, and Pila wrote and illustrated 2,375 books.
“Now we have to wrap them,” Shammy said.
They had just finished wrapping everything they made when a loud voice from somewhere in the ceiling called “All leprechauns (and humans), please stop what you are doing and go to Santa for your next assignment. Thank you.”
