A darkness swept over and made it night.
Things used to be good, things used to be
bright. Everyone was at peace, no bad thing
was in sight. Until one day, a man made a
choice that changed things for good, because
he thought it was right.
But he was wrong...

“Who needs these trees? Who wants these trees? Why
do they even matter?” said the Tree Chopper. He took
his axe and put it up to the trunk. He used all of his
strength to knock it down. A grin spreads across his
face.
“Now this is fun. More room for stores! More room for
buildings! Who needs these trees?”
He continues chopping.
“Why would you want to chop down a tree?” a voice
said.
The tree chopper stops and looks up at the sky. An
orange figure floated down and he didn’t know why.
“Now who are you?” the tree chopper asked.
The orange figure smiled, a smile so bright. He took his
hand and put it out for the Tree Chopper who thought
he was making things right.

“I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees, and you sir are
chopping them down, may I ask why?”
The Tree Chopper shrugs.
“Are there any use for these?” he asked.
The Lorax stared at him.
“Of course there is! Ever heard of oxygen?”
The tree chopper dropped his axe and crossed his arms.
“Oxygen? What is that for?”
“It helps us breathe! All biotic creatures need it to survive!
Where do you think we get oxygen?”
“The sky?” the tree chopper asked uncertainly.
The Lorax shook his head.
“We get it from trees. If you keep cutting down these trees,
then there won’t be any left! Do you really want that?”
“Deforestation doesn’t matter! Does it?”

“It does matter”, said the Lorax, “Just give me
the axe.
“No”, said the Tree Chopper, “Now crawl up
your little ladder”.
“Ok, said the Lorax, “You’ve been warned”.
As the Lorax walked off, the tree chopper
began to laugh, picked up the axe, and was
about to chop the tree until a hand stopped
him. It was the Once Ler.
“Wait”! he said, “What are you doing”? “I
made the same mistake and it took a long time
getting these threes back”.

“Who needs trees anyways?”, said the tree
chopper.
“They are a waste of space and if we need
trees that bad, then we will just plant fake
ones.”
“No, you’re wrong”, said the Once Ler ,”We
need oxygen, real oxygen. We need
photosynthesis, we need the leaves. The trees
aren’t a waste of space, they’re homes to
these lovely animals”

“So what”, said the tree chopper, “They can
always find a new home”.
“No, you’re wrong”, said the once ler, “this is
their habitat. Half of them were born and
raised here. You can’t just run them off just
because you want to build stores”.
“I guess you’re right”, said the tree chopper.
“I know I am”, said the once ler “now promise
me you won’t cut down anymore trees”.
“Ok” said the Tree Chopper,”I promise”

The once ler then turned around and walked
towards his home. In his head he thought that
the tree copper was going to keep his promise,
but that didn’t last long. The tree chopper
stood there looking at the trees thinking about
how much money he could be making. Then all
of a sudden, Mr. O’hare paid him a visit.
“Why, I don’t see trees on the ground and
buildings up”, he said, “ I gave you orders and
I expect you to follow them. I want these trees
chopped down and out of the way by tomorrow
afternoon."

The tree chopper sat there looking very
confused. He had needed this job. So he called
his three triplet brothers inlaw(Harris,
Hamish, and Hubert), and they began chopping
down all the trees.
They chopped and they chopped and they
chopped. They chopped until the forest looked
the way it did a couple years back. Dark, cold,
and scary.

All the forest animals left yet again. When the
once ler found out, he was furious. He was
upset because the tree chopper never kept his
promise. He realized how the Lorax felt when
he didn’t keep his promise either a couple of
years ago. He felt like he had to do something.
So he called his old friend Ted, and explained
to him everything that had happened. He was
heartbroken because he spent so much time
planting that one tree in town.

He called his grandmother who knew where
the last seed was hidden.
“Ask the Lorax”, said the Grandmother, “He
will answer all your questions”.
So the next day, Ted did. He decided once
again that it was time to talk to the Lorax. Ted
hopped on his motorcycle and left the town
that night. He made it to the forest in no time
and stopped at the “Unless” tree.
