Light waves are seen
like colors
of the rainbow
On a bright sunny day,

Light comes into your eyes
through the cornea (say: KOR-nee-uh),
which protects your eye. It sits
in front of the colored part of
your eye. But you can't see it
because it's clear like glass.
Light then passes through your pupil

The size of your pupil changes depending if you're in the dark
or in the light. It controls how much light it wants to allow to
come through in order to see. The darker it is, the bigger
your pupil gets. The brighter it is, the smaller your pupil gets.

your parents help you shine a light
near your eye and you will be able
to see your pupils change sizes.

The colored part that surrounds
your pupil is called the iris
(say: EYE-riss). It's what controls
your pupil to change its sizes by
using its muscles to squeeze it. Iris's
come in all kinds of colors.

Now these next few parts of your
eye are really cool! You and I actually
can't see them, only doctors can through
their microscopes.
After light passes through your pupils,
it goes through your lens. The lens is
found right behind the iris and has no
color. The lens's job is to focus incoming
light on the back of the eyeball called
the retina (say: RET-in-uh).

Your retina is located in the very back of your eye. Inside it carries
millions and millions of cells that are sensitive to light. It takes the light it
sees, changes it to nerve signals, and your brain understands why it's seeing.


The retina also uses cells called rods and cones to process the light
we see. There's about 120 million rods in each eye and about 5
million cones. They process light to give you the whole picture.
The rods help us see in the dark. This is because rods see in black,
white and all shades of gray. They can't tell the difference between
colors.
The cones help us see in bright light. This is because they sense
colors and they need more light then rods do in order to work. There
are 3 different cone types. Each type is sensitive to one specific
color-red, blue or green. This is what helps us see millions of colors.

Now this next function of your eye is what's connected to your
brain. The rods and cones of the retina change the colors and
shapes we see into millions of nerve messages. The optic nerve
then carries those messages from your eye to your brain. The
combination and gathering of all these cells form together like
strands of a rope and that's what forms the optic nerve.

your eyes! But in this case, you actually do. But, you're eyes
are playing tricks on you. You see, that's what an optical
illusion is. Seeing something that doesn't really exist, or isn't
how it appears. Here's what a few look like.
