Incorporating ocean literacy into educational curricula at all levelshelps to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious citizens who are equipped
to address the complex challenges facing our ocean.
By fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation
of the ocean, we can inspire individuals to become advocates for marine conservation and work towards a sustainable future for our planet.
Teaching ocean literacy
Ιt is important to teach ocean sustainability to young children and cultivate their environmental awareness, in order to change the behavior of students, family, local and wider community.
Because we must change the way we live and operate on this planet to ensure its sustainability for future generations, starting from young children and investing in them.

What sea do we want to have ?
The choice is in our hands

From providing food and regulating the climate to supporting biodiversity and offering recreational opportunities, the ocean plays a fundamental role
in the health and stability of our planet.
Yet, despite its significance, many people lack a basic understanding of the ocean and its importance.
Teaching ocean literacy is essential for several reasons:
Environmental Stewardship:
By educating individuals about the ocean and its ecosystems, we foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards marine environments.
People who understand the interconnectedness of human activities and ocean health are more likely to make informed choices that reduce their environmental impact.
Climate Change Awareness: The ocean plays a critical role in regulating the Earth's climate. Teaching about ocean currents, carbon sequestration, and the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems increases awareness of the interconnectedness of global systems and the urgency of addressing climate change.
Biodiversity Conservation: The ocean is home to a vast array of marine species, many of which are yet to be discovered. Understanding marine biodiversity and the importance of preserving fragile ecosystems helps to conserve marine life and protect endangered species.
Economic Importance: The ocean supports numerous industries, including fishing, shipping, tourism, and renewable energy. Ocean literacy equips individuals with the knowledge to make sustainable decisions that support these industries while minimizing negative impacts on marine ecosystems.
Cultural Significance: For many coastal communities around the world, the ocean is not just an ecosystem but also a source of cultural identity and heritage. Teaching ocean literacy helps to preserve and celebrate diverse maritime cultures and traditions.

Global Citizenship:
In an increasingly interconnected world, understanding the ocean is essential for global citizenship.
Issues such as marine pollution, overfishing, and ocean acidification are global challenges that require collective action and cooperation among nations.

Kindergarten of Rizario Greece

An Ocean into our class!

Learning about "Endangered animals "

Learning behaviors

Our Blue "Robotics scenario"
Teaching the ocean pollution
We discussed the causes that pollute the sea and how these affects our life and the environment. We made
a little experiment and children created a dirty sea adding brown color in water.
We learned about marine parks and their usefulness (protected areas) and where they exist (for example in Greece there is protected areas for the Mediterranean seals and sea turtle careta -careta ).

Children learn about the food chain and the effects of polluted seas.
We discus about the ecosystem and the usefulness of sea ,the causes of its pollution and what we can do to actively protect our beaches and oceans.
Children thoughts and suggestions
Children suggest and record ways to keep our seas and coasts clean and we learn ways of good behavior and what we must not to do.
Don’t waste the water!
Keep our rivers clean !
No more plastics in the sea!
We want clean seas and coasts!
No garbage in our seas and on our beaches!
We do not want to eat fishes with plastics!
Factories ,hotels and ships should not pollute the sea !
We have to protect the endangered animals!
We want to swim into clear seas!
