Mario was a pizza maker who owned Scrumptious
Pizza, a pizza parlor in a small town. He was known
for making some of the best pizza and was always very
busy. Customers dined in or carried out from open to
close.
Mario sold small pizza’s which had 4 slices,
mediums which had 8 slices and large pizzas that had
12 slices. He carried a variety of pizza toppings;
sausage, cheese, olives, pineapple, bacon, peppers,
and the most popular, pepperoni.

“1 large pepperoni pizza please!”
“2 medium bacon pizzas for me please!"
“1 small cheese pizza over here!”
“3 large pizzas, 1 with pepperoni, 1 cheese
and 1 pineapple to go please!"
Mario filled these orders quickly on a daily
basis with no problems.

One day, regular customers, Luigi and Kong, walked in to place
a carryout order. “I’ll take 1 large pizza with pepperoni, bacon,
olives and sausage to go. I want there to be an equal amount of
slices of each, please Mario.” said Luigi.
“That sounds delicious Luigi! I’d like the same, please Mario.” said
Kong.
“You both want 1 large pizza with pepperoni, bacon, olives and
sausage?” Mario asked, stunned by their order.
“Yes, that’s correct” said Luigi and Kong.
Mario was stunned by their order, they wanted four different
toppings! How will I know how many slices to do of each? Mario
wondered. Minutes passed as he stood with the dough in front of
him, not knowing what to do. The line for pizza orders began to
grow longer and longer.

“We’ve been waiting forever."
“What’s going on?”
Mario began to feel anxious hearing all his customers
complaints. He could see Luigi and Kong getting more upset as the
time passed. Just as he was about to give up he saw his mother,
Catarina, who was once a pizza maker, walk in.
Catarina looked at the line of customers waiting to order and
saw that they many didn't look very happy. She walked to the
counter and asked Mario why there was such a big line.
“They ordered a large pizza with four toppings and they want an
equal amount of slices for each topping. How should I divide the
toppings evenly into 12 slices?” asked Mario.
"Don't worry. I will help you," Catarina replied, smiling.

Catarina laid out all the ingredients that they
needed to make the pizzas. She explained, since he
needed equal parts, he must make sure that there is
an equal amount of slices for each.
She sliced the dough 12 ways and spreads out
the 4 ingredients. She topped one slice with one
topping. Then she added the same topping to
another slice. She continued to do that with each
topping until all of the pizza had equal amounts of
the four different toppings.
