There was once an old truck driver called Grandpa Frank. Not that he was a grandpa, but mainly because he was so old. Grandpa Frank was a simple being. He’d eat, read, pray, work, and sleep. That was all. Grandpa Frank worked very hard. He especially wanted a promotion, and he was very close to getting what he wanted.
One sunny morning Grandpa Frank started work as usual. He really liked his job. He liked to travel around and see new places.
Grandpa Frank drove all day, taking only lunch breaks, and finally took a break at 10:00 p.m. He decided to take a nap and read his bible afterward.
He read the story where young children would enter the kingdom of heaven.
‘’Interesting,’’ he thought.
Grandpa Frank hopped back into his seat to start driving again when he heard a rustle from outside. He looked out his window and saw a pink slipper behind the bush. Grandpa Frank took his
flashlight and climbed out of his truck to investigate. He pointed the flashlight at the bush.
Suddenly, a girl in pigtails leaped out of the bush. She shrieked when she saw Grandpa Frank.
‘’Don’t worry,’’ Grandpa Frank said. ‘’I won’t hurt y-’’
Suddenly a stick hurled through the air. The girl had tried to throw a stick at him. She missed.
‘’There’s no need to be afraid,’’ Grandpa Frank said carefully, truly a kind-hearted man. ‘’I won’t
hurt you.’’
The girl looked uneasily at Grandpa Frank.
‘’What’s your name?’’ asked Grandpa Frank.
‘’I’m Evie,’’ the girl whispered.
‘’Nice to meet you, Evie. I’m called Grandpa Frank. What are you doing here?’’
Immediately the girl distrusted him again. ‘’It’s none of your business.’’
‘’I know that, child,’’ Grandpa Frank said softly. ‘’I just want to know if you’re safe.’’
The girl looked warily at him.
‘’I might as well tell you. They’re going to find me anyways.’’
‘’Who’s going to find you?’’ Grandpa Frank said, growing worried.
‘’I’ve run away from the orphanage,’’ she said simply.
Grandpa Frank stroked his beard thoughtfully.
‘’Young lady,’’ he said, ‘’why did you leave?’’
Evie had tears in her eyes. ‘’They are very
cruel to us,’’ she said. ‘’Making us work very hard and giving us a scarce amount of food. We only get two pairs of clothes each, and only wash them every month. We only get new clothes after an entire year. My friend Jill was going to come with me. But she had extra work after she tried to sneak more food.’’
Grandpa Frank was sorrowful on the account of young Evie. ‘’Well,’’ he said, ‘’Instead of hiding in the bushes, how about you come with
me so we can see what you should do.’’
Evie eyed Grandpa Frank, but she did as he said.
Grandpa Frank never realized how lonely he was until then. He enjoyed talking to Evie, and Evie enjoyed talking to him as well. Grandpa Frank wanted to adopt Evie, and deep in Evie’s heart she wanted this as well.
But it wasn’t going to be easy. Grandpa Frank would have to give up truck driving- the thing he
