It was early in October and the nights had
just started to become chilly. I was not
particularly looking forward to going to the
park with my husband, but I went
nonetheless. It was already nine o’clock that
night and we were still waiting for a baseball
diamond to become clear so David, my
husband, and his team could play their game.
Finally, a field became vacant and the team
ran out with enthusiasm to begin. I moved to
sit with the other wives from church on the
cold, hard bleachers. I should have
remembered a blanket. It was so chilly!

The game began. David’s team was the home
team and the other team was the visitors. The
pitcher tossed the first pitch and the batter hit
the ball, sending it soaring back to center field.
I heard the words being yelled, “I got it! It’s
mine!” as the center fielder for our team place
his gloved left hand up and his right hand
behind for support. He caught the ball! Out
one for our team!

The next batter came up. Our pitcher tossed
the ball. The batter hit a line drive down to
second base. Our second base player caught
the ball and quickly pivoted his body to throw
the ball to first base. Out two for our team!

I was so excited for David’s team! I probably
would have been cheering more if I was not
cuddled up on the bleachers with the other
wives trying to stay warm. However,
something began to happen after our first two
outs. The batters for the other team kept
getting better, and better.
