Chapter 1: What is the Black Panther Party, and who created it?
The Black Panther Party was created to combat Black people's struggles throughout history and in America. The Panthers advocated for self-defense and empowerment within Black communities. The Panthers believed in protecting themselves and making their communities stronger.

Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale met at Merritt College.
They came together and created the Black Panther Party. The Party's main ideas were rooted in the belief that Black people needed to defend themselves against the ongoing struggles and injustices they faced in America and all across the globe.







Huey P. Newton
Huey P. Newton was born on February 17, 1942. The P. in Huey's name stands for Percy. Newton was born in Monroe, Louisiana. He and his family moved to Oakland, California, where he grew up. He was a political activist and revolutionary. He had a Ph.D. in social philosophy from the University of California Santa Cruz. He was an author of several book, a teacher, a leader and co founder of the Black Panthers.


Bobby Seale
Seale was born in Texas on October 22, 1936. He moved to Oakland, California, where he grew up. He was a political activist, author of several books, and co-founder of the Black Panther Party. Newton and Seale were not the only Panthers in the party. Many others had the same vision in mind and worked together.



Elaine Brown
Born March 2nd, 1943, in Philidaphilia, she played an important role in the Party. She served as chairwoman.




Lil Bobby Hunton
Robert James Hunton, also known as Lil Bobby Hunton, was born in 1950. At only 16 years old, he was the first to join the Panthers.
Chapter 2: Other Black Panther Members
Fred Hampton
Hampton was a leader in the Nation Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He was a member of the Black Panthers and helped the Panthers organize several programs.

Erica Huggins,
Born January 8, 1948, she was the director of the Black Panther Party's Intercommunal Youth Institute (IYI) in Oakland.


Kathleen Cleaver
Kathleen Cleaver, born May 13, 1945, in Texas, served as the Communications Secretary of the Party, handling media and spreading its message.
Angela Davis
She was born on January 26, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama. She's known for fighting for civil rights and social justice. Angela worked with the Black Panther Party.


Chapter 3: The Nia (Purpose)
The purpose of the Black Panther Party was to fight against police violence and oppression and to help poor and black people. The Black Panthers understood that black people have not been treated fairly throughout history. The Panthers made programs to help serve the people and help them gain access to resources they need to survive. The Black Panthers wanted black people to achieve self-determination. Some of the programs are coming next.


Intercommunal Youth Institute and the
Community Learning Center
The Intercommunal Youth Institute started in January 1971. It was a school for children and youth. The purpose was to educate and guide them to become capable of analyzing the problems they will face. The Community Learning Center was a multi-purpose center that provided cultural, social, and educational activities.
