It was a bright sunny morning and Beth
could hear the loud buses pass by her
house. She laid in her bed thinking about
what her and her mom were going to do for
the day. She could smell the aroma from
the eggs and bacon that her mom was
making in the kitchen as she thought about
her orthodontist appointment. Today was
the day she finally got her braces off. After
three grueling years of metal in her mouth,
she was ready to get them off. After laying
in her bed filled with excitement for a while,
she pulled herself out of her bed and into
the kitchen where her mom was.

“Today’s the big day” said Beth’s mom.
“Yep. I can’t wait to feel my teeth again and get this metal out of my mouth. I haven’t
been able to smile for pictures because all you can see is a mouth of metal. Plus, I hate
when people stare at my mouth when I talk, it makes me self-conscious.” Beth said with
a sad expression on her face.
“You shouldn’t care what you look like Beth or what other people think or say about you.
You look beautiful, with and without your braces.”
Beth fiddled with the eggs on her plate and thought about the many stares she had
received over the past three years.
“Well, start eating your breakfast because we have a couple of things to do before your
appointment.”
Beth tried to remember the last time she could run her tongue over her smooth teeth,
but nothing came to mind. She stuffed her mouth full of eggs and bacon and quickly
finished her breakfast while her mom cleaned up.

After a while, Beth and her mom stood in the living room
fixing their hair in sync, like two birds flying side by side.
“OK. We have to stop by city hall to pay the electric bill, then
we need to go to the Western Union to send grandma some
money, and finally to your orthodontist appointment” said
Beth’s mom.
Beth and her mom left the house and began their journey
through town by grabbing the public bus. Beth loved riding the
bus because she could see the different people that lived in
her community. An indigenous woman with a baby strapped to
her back; a construction worker with a bucket filled with
supplies, and even a business man with a gray suit on.

Beth and her mom finally approached at their first stop, city hall. Beth had been here
before with her mom; city hall was a tall building with many offices inside. The offices
were painted an egg white color, which made it feel cold and depressing. They went
directly into the office that said “Utilities Office”.
While her mom made the transaction, Beth could not help but notice a young boy with a
leg brace waiting in line with his mother. The young boy was wearing oversized clothes
that had many stains on it; and their color seemed to have faded from many washes.
However, it wasn’t the boy’s clothes that caught Beth’s attention but rather how little
attention he paid to the brace on his leg. Beth could only imagine how embarrassed she
would be if she had to wear a leg brace that made you look like the Terminator’s child.
Beth imagined herself refusing to leave the house or preferring to wear sweatpants on a
warm sunny day, like today, rather than shorts just to avoid the judgmental stare of the
people around her. However, this young boy did not seem embarrassed to be wearing the
leg brace; on the contrary, he ignored the stares he received from many of the people in
the office, he smiled at those who stared too long and held his mom’s hand as though no
one was in the office.
“Let’s go honey” her mom said, startling Beth.
As they walked out of the office, Beth wondered if she could ever ignore what other
people think, just as the boy in the office did.
