On October 12, we celebrate a 

holiday called Columbus Day.  

This day, you do not have school 

because we are remembering the 

day an explorer called Christopher 

Columbus thought he 

discovered America.

Christopher Columbus was an 

explorer born in Italy.   People 

say that he discovered America, 

but this isn't quite true.   There 

were already a lot of people living 

there.   Native Americans had been 

there for a long time before 

Columbus came, and the Vikings 

had already visited the land too.

In 1492, Columbus wanted to travel 

to India so he could find gold and 

spices.   He asked the king and queen 

of Spain to give him ships and money 

so he could sail around the world to 

India, and they said yes.  

They gave him three boats, food, 

and people to go with him to 

help.   He set sail with three 

boats, called the Niña, the Pinta, 

and the Santa Maria, and a crew 

of ninety men.

Columbus sailed for over two 

months.   He landed on an island 

near America on October 12.   

He learned that there were 

Native Americans living there, 

but called them Indians, because 

he thought he was in India. He 

did not know America existed at 

all!
