My name is Josiah. My parents just moved to the U.S. from Mexico. It has been a big adjustment moving from Mexico to the United States. I'll be starting school here in Chicago tomorrow. There is a fear that I will not be welcome or liked by the students in my classroom."
I'm nervous about meeting new friends, learning languages, and being in a new environment.
It was almost bedtime when Josiah decided to get ready for school tomorrow.
He called out to his mother to come here.
"Yes, Josiah," his mom answered.
"I don't want to go to school tomorrow," said Josiah.
"Why is that?" asked his mother
"Umm, I don't know how the other kids will like me. I want to be perfect for my classmates."
His mom confidently responded, "You are already perfect to me, so I know your classmates will feel the same. I want you to remember this: Be good, Be kind, Love yourself, and everything will be okay."
The next day, while getting ready for school, Josiah repeated to himself, 'Be good, Be kind, Love yourself, and everything will be OK.'
When it was time to leave for school, Josiah looked at his mom and said, "Are you sure everything will be OK ?"
Josiah's mom responded, "Yes, I know for sure. I want you to have a great day at school, and I can't wait to hear about it when you get home."
