                 Chapter One

                 The Big Surprise

There once was a boy named Jared. Jared lived 

with his mother, father, and younger brother. 

Like any normal ten year old boy, he loved 

sports, enjoyed school, and was always 

hanging out with friends. 

Jared had always been interested in 

adventures and traveling. On his 11th 

birthday, he finally got that as a present 

from his mom and dad. 

   "Thanks," he exclaimed, stunned. "I've 

always wanted to have adventures like 

this."

   The truth was, he had had adventures 

before. The woods in his backyard, falling from 

the fire escape...... and barely surviving it. 

Still, he couldn't believe this. 

His mom stated that they would be leaving for 

South America's dense rain forests with a 

guide in a couple of weeks. Jared couldn't wait.

            Chapter Two

            The First Adventure

   The first thing Jared wanted to do when they 

got off the plane and arrived at the cabin they 

were staying at was to start the tour. The tour 

guide, whose name was Julio, laughed and 

said, "It's not quite time for that yet. I'll give 

you a tour of the house." 

When they went to bed that night, Jared 

waited until everyone was asleep until he crept  

out into the rainforest. He gasped. He saw

little beady eyes. He heard parrots. He 

decided he would go back next morning. As he 

was starting to leave, he heard something. Uh-  

oh, he thought. He ran away from the sound, 

but before he could get back home, he realized 

the sound was his brother Mario.

           Chapter Three

        Trouble for Jared

   "M-mario!" he sputtered. "What on 

earth are you doing here?"

   "Oh, I knew you would be here 

tonight," he said. When I saw you 

sneak away, I stole out of the house. 

Then, when you seemed sucked into 

this, I tiptoed past you."

Frustrated, Jared slunk home. He figured that 

he would be told on by next afternoon, and he 

wouldn't be able to go on their first hike. Then 

the next day, he realized that Mario wasn't 

acting like he was going to inform their 

parents. In the afternoon, he asked him about 

this.

   "Aren't you going to tell on me?" he asked 

Mario.

   "No,'' he explained. "Last night's events were 

just for a joke."
