One day at school, the children walked into 

the classroom to find a box on top of the 

teacher’s desk that was covered in a 

bright, blue cloth.

The children were chatting 

excitedly wondering what was in 

the box. The teacher walked in and 

got the class to settle down. She 

explained that this is their new 

classroom pet, a hamster, and each 

child will be given the opportunity 

to take the pet home with them for 

two days.

The class was very excited and 

couldn't wait to take the hamster 

home. 

One boy, named John was the first 

to take the hamster home. He was 

so excited and couldn't wait to 

show his parents.

John’s best friend was Tommy who 

was also in the same class. John 

and Tommy walked home to John’s 

house with the hamster that day. 

When they got home, they got all 

settled and put the hamster’s cage 

on John’s dresser so he would be 

safe for the two days that he would 

be there. 

John and Tommy would take the hamster out of its cage and 

play with him. John got up to go to the bathroom and when he 

came back the hamster was gone. John and Tommy panicked, 

looking all over for the hamster. John blamed himself because 

he was supposed to be the one taking care of the hamster. 

Tommy did not tell John that when he was in the bathroom, 

Tommy got up to go to the kitchen to find something to eat. 

He left the hamster alone and when he got back he was no 

where to be found. 

Tommy struggled with the idea of telling John that he lost the 

hamster. He didn't want to hurt his friend and knew he would 

get in trouble with their teacher for losing the hamster.
