Prologue:
There was a rustling through the trees, but twelve-moon-old Meadowpaw didn't notice. It was her Warrior Ceremony, and nothing was going to stop her from becoming a warrior. Maplestar, the ThunderClan leader, was reading through a long scroll that trailed down all of the way through the forest floor.
Meadowpaw had been Amberfoot's apprentice, and was proud of it.
Meadowpaw usually got excited by a lot of things, but the thing she was most excited for was getting an apprentice of her own.
"Amberfoot made regular reports back to me about young Meadowpaw," Maplestar was saying. "I trust everything Amberfoot has told me is accurate, and if it is indeed so, Meadowpaw has done phenomenally. She has trained night and day, through rain and through shine, and has achieved more than any other ThunderClan apprentice in many, many moons." Meadowpaw beamed. But as suddenly as it had came, Meadowpaw's pride was replaced with a humungous batch of butterflies in her stomach, as Maplestar had just grunted and started the message to StarClan.
"I, Maplestar," he said, "leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on the apprentice known as Meadowpaw. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble Code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Her name will be Meadowpelt." "Meadowpelt! Meadowpelt! Meadowpelt!" the Clan cheered. Sunspot, Meadowpelt's best friend and most skilled ThunderClan warrior, leaned in and whispered in Meadowpelt's ear, "I know you'll be great."
"Now," Maplestar continued when the clapping died down, "tomorrow we will have a Clan Meeting to determine Meadowpelt's apprentice." There was clapping, but it was shortly ceased due to the fact of sleek bodies emerging from the trees. "Cloudstar!" Maplestar growled. "In what means do you trespass upon ThunderClan territory?" "Ah," sneered the RiverClan leader known as Cloudstar. "After tonight, this will be just
another RiverClan territory." The RiverClan Warriors sniggered. "Tulipheart!" Cloudstar growled. A milky-white she-cat, who was standing right behind Cloudstar, rushed over to his side. "Yes, sir?" she asked. "Book the whole RiverClan territory. We will be hosting a Warrior Ceremony for young Meadowpaw here." "Yes, sir," the deputy Tulipheart said, and she disappeared back into the trees. Meadowpelt felt a surge of confusion and fury. Her name was Meadowpelt now, not Meadowpaw, and she wasn't young! "I do not understand," Maplestar said coldly. "Meadowpelt is a ThunderClan warrior." "Not anymore," Cloudstar said. "You know recruiting Warriors from outside of the given Clan is against the Code of the Clans, Cloudstar." "Ah, a classic Maplestar move," Cloudstar said coldly. "But I was ready for your ridiculously annoying questions, Maplestar. And here is the ridiculously simple answer: StarClan
has given me permission, right, Pretzelknot?" The fawn RiverClan medicine cat nodded. "Impossible!" Maplestar roared. "It is indeed very possible, Maplestar," Cloudstar said. "Meadowpelt belongs to ThunderClan!" Maplestar bellowed. "Not anymore," Cloudstar said. Suddenly, the milky-white figure of Tulipheart returned to Cloudstar's side through the trees. "Territory booked," she reported to the tom. "Excellent, Tulipheart, excellent," Cloudstar said. Meadowpelt opened her mouth to say something, but her voice got caught in her throat. She grunted instead. "Do you have something you would like to share with the class, Meadowpaw?" Cloudstar asked her. She swallowed and said, "I don't understand." Her voice cracked. "What do you not understand, young RiverClan warrior?" "I don't understand," she said, anger boiling in the pit of her stomach, "that I just became a ThunderClan warrior and
now you're recruiting me to RiverClan, and you haven't even asked if all that's okay with me!" "My apologies, Meadowpaw," Cloudstar sneered curtly. "And my name is Meadowpelt!" "My apologies, Meadowpa - pelt," Cloudstar said through gritted teeth. "Is me recruiting you to the most powerful and mighty Clan in all of the Clans okay with you, Meadowpa - pelt?" "No, actually, it's not!" Meadowpelt growled. "And ThunderClan is superior to RiverClan!" "Now!" Cloudstar roared, and the RiverClan warriors closed in on the ThunderClan warriors.
Everything was a blur - cats leaping, claws sinking into skin, and forest fires burning. There was screaming, and Meadowpelt didn't know what to do. She hid away in the nearest den - the apprentices'. "MEADOWPELT!" she heard Maplestar roar. "COME OUT AND FIGHT FOR YOUR CLAN!" But Meadowpelt couldn't do anything - the den had caught fire
and Meadowpelt had gotten surrounded by a circle of flames. "Help!" she shrieked. "Help me! Please! Someone! HELP!" But it was no use. No one could hear her.
Suddenly, the flames went out and the yelling ceased. Meadowpelt couldn't see anything due to the thick layer of smoke drifting through the air of the den. She could just make out a body coming into the den. "MEADOWPELT, YOU COWARD!" Maplestar bellowed. "YOU HAVE DISGRACED THE NAME OF THUNDERCLAN BY NOT FOLLOWING WARRIOR CODE, AND YOU WILL BE PUNISHED BY NOT RECEIVING AN APPRENTICE!" Tears swam in Meadowpelt's eyes, and she left the burnt den without a word. She was going to flee ThunderClan for good.

Chapter One:
Twelve Moons Later
Aha! Gotcha!" Meadowpelt said, and pounced on top of a particularly fat mouse. It tried to scurry away, but she pinned it to the ground by the tail with one of her sharp claws. She picked up the mouse and gobbled it up in one bite.
Suddenly, two jet-black toms approached Meadowpelt.
Meadowpelt ducked behind a bush. "Meadowpelt!" called the larger of the toms. Meadowpelt crept out from behind the bush and squinted at the toms. "Toadtail? Frogpaw?" "Maplestar has requested your return to ThunderClan, Meadowpelt," the larger tom, Toadtail, said. "I wonder why Maplestar wants her back," the smaller of the toms, Frogpaw, sneered. "He said it himself that she was a coward and a disgrace to ThunderClan." "I agree, Frogpaw, but that was twelve moons ago and Maplestar has obviously changed his mind," Toadtail said. Meadowpelt pawed at the ground in humiliation. "Thanks for backing me up, Toadtail," she muttered. "And why would someone as great as I back up someone as poor as you?" Toadtail said. "Because it's my birthday," Meadowpelt murmured. Toadtail squinted at the she-cat. "Ah," he said sarcastically. "Second birthday, isn't it? Twenty-four moons, an
astonishing accomplishment." "Don't sass me, Toadtail!" Meadowpelt growled. "You know I know your secret, and I will gladly publicize it if I have to." For the first time, Toadtail looked frightened. "What is it, Toadtail?" Frogpaw asked, tugging at his older brother. "Nothing, Frogpaw," Toadtail said quietly, and with that, he and Frogpaw ran swiftly away from Meadowpelt. She watched the toms until they had disappeared completely through the trees. Meadowpelt sighed. She hadn't returned to ThunderClan for twelve moons. What would be the cats' reactions when she returned? She knew for a fact Toadtail and Frogpaw wouldn't be happy. But it was true. Meadowpelt would be glad to publicize Toadtail's secret. After all, it had left a weight on her shoulders for nearly nineteen moons.
On the other hand, it was a very big secret, and would result in illegal in-Clan fighting, which Meadowpelt did not want any part in.
Meadowpelt sighed. I'll return to ThunderClan tomorrow, Meadowpelt thought. I'll sleep on it.
She gathered a piled of leaves and twigs and plopped down onto it. Her eyelids closed, and even then she knew her dreams that night wouldn't be very pleasant.

Chapter
Two:
Six-moon-old Toadpaw stood there, petrified. Meadowpaw looked around wildly. "Maplestar!" she shrieked. "Maplestar! Help!" It was no use. Everyone was slumbering in the dens, and Meadowpaw didn't dream for a second to awake the ThunderClan leader.
Abandoning her attempt of calling for help, Meadowpaw leapt over to Toadpaw, who was still standing there, rooted to the spot, paralyzed. "It's going to be okay, Toadpaw," she said soothingly, putting her paw gently on her friend's shoulder. "No, it's not," Toadpaw said quietly. "I'm a monster." "You're not a monster," Meadowpaw said.
But at that moment, Toadpaw rose into the air. Golden laser beams shot out of his eyes and blasted Meadowpaw aside. Blood spurted from the spots where the beams had hit her. Wiping blood off of her face, Meadowpaw jumped back to her paws. "GIVE ME MEADOWPAW!" Toadpaw roared, but not in his usual deep voice. It was a harsh she-cat voice. The voice of ShadowClan's leader, Ivystar.
Meadowpelt awoke abruptly. The dream was still fresh in her mind.
It was painful to relive that moment.
Struggling to her paws, Meadowpelt's gaze drifted toward her bed made out of leaves. The leaves were ripped and torn. Meadowpelt had been thrashing around in her dream. The sunlight was shining through the trees. Meadowpelt sighed. Today she would have to return to ThunderClan. I ought to get going now, she thought.
Meadowpelt was finally going home.

Chapter
Three:
Meadowpelt breathed in the ThunderClan air for the first time in a year. She took a deep breath, and entered through the gorse entrance. The second she entered the camp, all eyes turned to her. She could see Sunspot through the crowd of cats - the only one smiling.
Meadowpelt only got a few moments to identify everyone, however - her vision was obscured by one familiar blond tom, and one familiar blond tom only. The tom's face clearly showed massive fury. He grabbed Meadowpelt by the neck, stopping her breathing entirely. "Maplestar!" she choked. "Meadowpelt," Maplestar growled in a low voice. Suddenly, he let go. Another familiar cat had pulled him away. Panting, Meadowpelt got a good look at the cat. It was a gray she-cat. It was the ThunderClan medicine cat, Bellbloom. She hastily pulled Meadowpelt away from Maplestar and took her to the medicine den. She started treating her wounds she had gotten from her year of being a loner. Despite it still being morning time, Meadowpelt was exhausted. She fell into a deep slumber, her dream about Toadtail recurring again and again.
~
When Meadowpelt awoke next morning feeling considerably refreshed, a tired and weary-looking Bellbloom was still tending to her wounds. With an approving nod from her, Meadowpelt sat up and stretched. "Good morning, Meadowpelt, and welcome back to ThunderClan," Bellbloom said bittersweetly to her. "Good news - most of your wounds have started closing up. Some might need a little extra time to start healing. You'll stay in this den for one more night and I'll check on you in the morning. All of your wounds should be getting better by then." "Thanks, Bellbloom," Meadowpelt said gratefully. "I really owe you." "It was no trouble at all," Bellbloom said, but Meadowpelt could tell she was exhausted and sweating from all of the work.
