Josephine Cochrane (b. March 8, 1839, Ashtabula County, Ohio – d. August 3, 1913) built the first practical dishwasher in Shelbyville, Illinois , in 1886 , and the patent for the dishwasher was granted to her by Joel Houghton in 1886.
Cochrane was a wealthy woman who frequently hosted dinner parties. She never did the dishes herself. He had servants who did this for him, but he wanted a machine that could do this job faster without breaking any dishes. No one has ever invented a machine like this. So he did it himself she. “If no one invents a dishwasher, then I'll do it myself!” she is said to have shouted. First she measured the dimensions of the dishes. She then made wire compartments, each specifically designed to fit plates, cups or saucers. The pods were placed in a wheel that would push the flat surfaces into the copper boiler. The motor turned the wheel as hot soapy water gushed up from the bottom of the pan and fell onto the dishes. His friends were so impressed by this situation that they built a dishwasher for them and named it "Cochrane Dishwasher". The name spread, and soon he was receiving requests from restaurants and hotels in Illinois to build dishwashers. She patented the machine she made and started producing it. He demonstrated his invention at the Columbian World's Fair in Chicago in 1893 and won the award for "the best mechanical construction in durability and adaptability to workability." He started the Garis-Cohcrane Manufacturing Company, which became part of the line of KitchenAid appliances made by the WhirlPool Company .

A writer during the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction", Christie has been called the "Queen of Crime"—a moniker which is now trademarked by her estate—or the "Queen of Mystery". She also wrote six novels under thepseudonym Mary Westmacott. In 1971, she was made a Dame (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to literature. Guinness World Records lists Christie as the best-selling fiction writer of all time, her novels having sold more than two billion copies
