"Good morning students, my name is Mr. Dunn."
"Good morning Mr. Dunn!"
"Today I have a special surprise for you. We are going on a mathmagical journey. I have a magic remote control that lets me turn any smartboard into a magical portal so we can journey the world without ever leaving the classroom. Today we are going to visit several different places to learn how math is used in everyday life."
Mr. Dunn and the students jump through the now magical smartboard for their first adventure.
The first stop is at Betty Bonnet's Barkery

Mr. Dunn and the children pop out of the magic portal and meet Ms. Betty.
"Good morning, everyone, I am so glad you are here. I need your help. I have an order to prepare for a customer. He needs five loaves of bread, but I only have two loaves baked and ready. How many loaves do I need to finish his order?"
The children all pull out their notebooks and write down 5 - 2 = __. Mr. Dunn and Ms. Betty listen as the children start to work out the problem.
"Five loaves of bread minus two loaves of bread, makes three loaves of bread." serveral of the students said.
"That is very good reasoning." exclaimed Ms. Betty. "Thank you so much for helping me out today."
Mr. Dunn and the students all say goodbye to Ms. Betty. Mr. Dunn presses the button on the magic remote to open the portal to their next stop.

The students pop out of the smartboard portal and discover they are in a library. They are greeted by Ms. Adrian the librarian.
"Good morning, I am so glad you are here. Mr. Dunn mentioned that you all would be stopping by today to help me out. I need to find twenty history books for the second-grade class that is coming by later. I have pulled ten books already. How many more do I need?
The students all pull out their notebooks again and write down ____ + 10 = 20. Mr Dunn and Ms. Adrian listen as the students reason out the problem.
"If she has ten books, we know that we can work backwards and solve the problem by doing the opposite. Twenty minus ten equals ten, so Ms. Adrian needs to find then more books.
"Thank you all so much for you help." Ms. Adrian replied.
Mr. Dunn presses the button on the magic remote and the students are off to their next destination.

The portal opens, Mr. Dunn and the students walk out into a bank. They are welcomed by Terry the teller who is already in the process of helping a customer.
"Good morning, class, you got here at just the right time. I am trying to give back change to Ms. Mona and I have forgotten how much I need to give her back. She needs ten dollars in total, and I have already given her back four dollars. How much more do I need to give her?
The students pull their trusty notebooks out again and begin to write down the problem. They write down 10 - 4 = ___. They all shout in unison, "She needs six more dollars."
"Thank you so much, students. I am very glad that you stopped by to help me out today.
Once again, Mr. Dunn presses the button on the remote and the magic smartboard opens up to take the students to their next destination.
