Once upon a time there was a boy named Sam. The young boy lived in a city in the United States.
Sam loved to explore and dreamed of his future.

Sam's world changed once he heard of the Great War, also known as, World War I.
His father, who inspired Sam's dream, was passionate about liberal internationalism.
He believed it was their country's duty to take action to help the rest of the world have peace.

One day, Sam was playing in the backyard when he heard sad news from his parents' conversation.
The Lusitania was sunk by Germany. He felt shock by the loss of his fellow Americans.

As the war continued, Sam learned of the Zimmerman Telegram. His parents whispered about this secret message between Germany and Mexico.
The United States would enter the war.

News broke of President Wilson's Fourteen Points. They were a guide for a peaceful world after the war. Sam felt hopeful.

Soon after, Sam's older brother recieved a letter in the mail. He was to join the army.
At school, Sam learned about the Selective Service Act that required young men, like his brother, to fight for the country.
Sam felt pride and fear.

Sam began to see changes in his town as well. His parents talked about the War Industry Board.
The board helped to organize production of war goods. His town became busy with activity.

As the war continued, Sam heard about the Espionage Act and Sedition Act.
They were laws that silenced anyone who spoke against the war.
Sam felt worried about living in a world without freedom of speech.
