In Spain, you can
find many different
types of pastimes
to engage in. These
pastimes are
supported by the
country's vivid
culture and diverse
regions and cities.
Dance is a very
popular pastime
that Spanish people
engage in all over
the country.

Flamenco is a famous form of Spanish folk music and
accompanying dance that began in the Andalusia region
of Spain during the 18th century. El baile flamenco
(flamenco dance) is known for it's expressive use of the
arms and stamping of the feet. Female dancers are
usually dressed in brightly colored traditional dresses.
Dances such as el baile flamenco are still commonly
practiced and performed today, especially in the streets
or fairs of large cities, such as Seville, Spain.

Spanish
bullfighting, or
corrida de toros, is
another cultural
pastime that has
been practiced for
over 300 years.
Matadors, or
bullfighters, all over
the country learn this
trade beginning at a
young age and
perform for large
crowds of people.

A once-yearly pastime known as the running
of the bulls is practiced to celebrate las
fiestas de San Fermin. Bulls are released and
led through the Old Quarter of Pamplona,
Spain. Anyone may join in this pastime to run
along with (or from) the bulls.

Many types of sports are
common in Spain, as
well. Soccer, or fútbol, is
indisputably the most
popular sport in Spain. It
was introduced in Spain
in the late 19th century
and has grown to
engage players of all
ages in all regions of the
country.

Fútbol is an incredibly popular after-
school pastime for young players.
Spain is also home to many famous
fútbol clubs, such as the Spanish
National Football Team, or la
selección. Pictured is the la selección
club winning the 2010 FIFA World
Cup.

Cultural and sport pastimes are not the only
activities popular in Spain. Thanks to the
country's diverse landscape, many outdoor
activities are often taken advantage of by
Spanish people. Spain is home to many
famous mountain ranges such as Sierra
Nevada, the Pyrenees, and the Cantabrian
Mountains.

Skiing the
snowy Sierra
Nevada
mountains in
the southern
Andalusia
region of Spain
is a common
pastime.

Hiking and backpacking are common pastimes of the
Pyrenees mountains in the Northern Andorra region of
Spain.

In the Cantabrian Mountains that stretch across
Northwestern Spain, cycling is a common pastime along
with rock climbing.

Spain's beautiful coasts enable people to
enjoy many activities such as swimming,
diving, snorkeling, surfing, and simply
spending a day on the beach. Spain is
bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the West
and North and by the Mediterranean Sea to
the East. Both coasts allow for many fun
activities in the sun.

Surfing in San Sebastian on the Northern Atlantic Coast

A popular pastime in coastal cities such as
Barcelona is spending time relaxing in the sun.
