The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a
happy holiday, not a sad one, so if you ever go
to one, don’t be scared. This holiday is just for
the remembrance of the lost dead ones. Also,
though some believe that spirits rise out of
coffins and curse the ones who were mean to
them, that’s not true at all!

The Day of the Dead is celebrated from
October 31-November 2. If you go to a party
though, they will usually be on November 1-2.
On the first day, relatives place flowers on
graves. On the second day, relatives have
parties in their houses. On the third day, the
party expands to the town and coffins are
carried to the town by people dressed as
skeletons.

This holiday is celebrated in many points of the
world, but the biggest point is Mexico. Many
countries and cities celebrate it and many
people would have lived to tell the tale if they
were not in coffins being carried to the town by
people dressed up like skeletons.

The Day of the Dead is listed on the Aztec
Calendar as two parts; The Feast of the Little
Dead Ones and The Feast of the Old
Remembership. The Mexicans celebrated this
holiday first, but later it expanded to many
different points at different times. This is a
great holiday for relatives to remember dead.

This holiday is made for the remembrance for
the dead ones, old and young. The Mexicans
started this holiday because they decided,
‘Well, why don’t we remember the dead with a
holiday?’

Glossary:
coffins-a box or chest for a dead body
skeletons-the bones that support the body of a
human or animal
Aztec-a member of Nahuatl or Mexican
speaking people
