It's 7 p.m. in Kenya. A restaurant is crowded. No one is talking. Everyone is watching the news on TV. Some walked miles to get there. This is common in much of Africa. Many people have no electricity. It's one of the biggest problems facing the second largest continent.
In sub-Saharan Africa, there are about 625 million people living without electric power.
Most of them are in isolated areas. There are no electrical grids. And in other places the electricity doesn't work all of the time. In Ghana, people call the power dum/sor. The name means "off/on." That's because the electricity flickers so much.
But Africa does receive a lot of sunshine. This makes it a good place for solar panels. Solar panels used to be expensive.
