It was a typical, fun day for most kids my age at the end of summer.

School supplies were bought for the new school year, first-day outfits were picked out, and kids were anxious to see their friends again. Our teachers and bus schedules are known.
I was eager to meet my new classmates and start school the following week;
however, things drastically changed.

It was August 22, 2015, a week before school, and it should have been a regular, typical, hot summer day.

I was playing and hanging out with my older cousins and my brother at our grandparents' house. Sometimes, we would fish, swim in the pond, and play hide and seek, but today, we decided to ride our four-wheelers.

My brother, Conor, went with our cousin Bryce, and I went with our cousin Riley on the four-wheelers. It should have been a casual ride through the woods, but suddenly, in the blink of an eye...

*crash*
My body was thrown into something hard.
Next thing I knew, a handlebar collided with my chest when the four-wheeler was stopped against a pile of logs and a tree. I got off the four-wheeler and felt tired, light-headed, out of breath, and was feeling more pain in my side than I ever felt before.

In a panic, my grandparents set me aside to rest on a black recliner in their house and called my mom. When my mom came over, she instantly could tell something was wrong because I was pale, in pain, and could not walk.

My mom took me to Urgent Care, where I met a friendly young doctor. He took his time with me.

"Where does it hurt? Or What happened? On a scale from one to ten, how much pain are you in?"

Based on my answers, he took x-rays of my ribs to see if they were broken.

Although my ribs were not broken, and I had no bruises to show, just like my Mom, the young doctor knew something was wrong and sent me to a larger hospital for an MRI and bloodwork.

After the MRI was finished, the doctors and nurses started to rush me from room to room, and I did not know why.

The doctors and nurses looked scared, so I was frightened. Then, the doctor sat my mom down.

"Owen has ruptured his spleen."
The next thing I knew, I was in an ambulance with my Mom being rushed to another hospital.
Now, the doctors, my Mom, and I were scared.

When I arrived at Lehigh Valley Hospital, a team of doctors was waiting for me in the emergency room.

They cut off my clothes and ran a few more tests.
Finally, my Mom and I received good news.

Owen, we can save your spleen with a lot of hard work and rest.
After that interaction, I was in the hospital for a couple of days, which felt like forever, beginning my journey of recovery. Most kids think hospitals are scary, but it was not so bad after all.

Hospitals are very welcoming and supportive. I was able to order food anytime I wanted, receive gifts from local police officers, and have multiple dogs visit me and do tricks.

My family was able to stay with me and visit me anytime they wanted, so I was never alone.

I was released to go home the day before the first day of school for most kids, but not me. Most people think being in a hospital is hard, but that was thee easy part.
Being back home was harder since we had pets, including a puppy, and I was isolated from all my friends.
