The Leatherback Sea Turtle
Author: Kevin Sepulveda
Illustrated by: Kevin Sepulveda &
Mrs.Rivero 2014-2015 class

Leatherback sea turtles have adapted to live
in the very cold waters of the Pacific Ocean.

The shell of the leatherback sea turtle is
strengthened by thousands of tiny bone
plates.

The carapace is the scientific name for the
shell of this sea turtle.

Leatherback sea turtles have delicate jaws.
They resemble a pair of scissors.

They are considered endangered in the
United States of America. Pollution is
responsible for their unstable birthrate.

Leatherback sea turtle’s have no claws on their
flippers.

The gender of the leatherback sea turtle is
determined by what the temperature was while
it was in the egg.

Higher temperatures produce females turtles.

These reptiles take between 2-3 years
intervals between nesting.

Jellyfish are the most common type of food
for leatherback sea turtles.

These sea turtles are known to be active in
colder waters.

They are the largest spread sea turtle in the
north and south ranges of the ocean.

They migrate long distances. Some over
12,774 miles!

Unfortunately during the migration of the
Leatherback sea turtle, many of them are
caught in nets left behind by fishermen.

Female leatherback sea turtles lay their eggs
onshore and not in the ocean.

Leatherback sea turtles only prey on soft
animals.

They are very quick in the ocean. However,
they rely on their size and strength to survive
against predators.

Females will go to different nesting locations
but return to the same nesting beaches to lay
new eggs every 6-10 years. They follow a
cycle.

The common nesting sites are in South
America.

The greatest threat to leatherback sea turtles
are commercial fisheries.
