Because of heavy rain, D-Day was postponed for 24 hours, from 7:30 Am on June 5th to June 6th. Weather made air cover unreliable, but otherwise the attack went well.
Introduction
Omaha beach,
Fox section
The assault on Omaha beach, the easternmost section of Normandy, France was deadly. Artillery barrages were useless, since the German positions were out of range. In the main “Fox” section, 3 MG42s along with 2 bunkered ones held back wave one.
Wave 2 also faced heavy fire. Generals Patton and Bradley, seeing this, thought about calling off the assault. However, around 9:30 AM, a small group took down the 3 exposed MG42s. A fourth one was knocked out by flame, and the 5th one eventually surrendered. Entrenched Germans, after quick hand to hand fighting , also surrendered at about 10:30 in the morning. After some more minor fighting, the United States 1st and 3rd armies broke inland at 12:40.

The American dash inland
They had a successful inland dash, but was still miles short of their objective range. The beach was nicknamed “bloody Omaha”, since some 2400 American troops were killed or wounded in the Fox and dog sections alone.
Omaha beach,
Dog section
Dog section received similar damage and casualties as Fox section. It was split into 3 zones, Dog green, Dog red, and Dog white. Dog green was the most defended.
It had 3 Widerstandsnests, fortified
bunkers used by the Germans, an 88 millimeter Anti Tank and Aircraft gun, and a PAK 43 Anti Tank gun. It also housed a Renault FT 17 as artillery, together with a 50 millimeter anti aircraft gun. It housed minor MG 38s and 42s emplaced in open sandboxes.

Widerstandsnest WN 72
At the landing, A company was completely demolished, lots on the first landing craft, LCA 1015. The onslaught was lifetaking, and men hid behind anything, even each other. Captain Taylor Fellers, the A company commander, was also killed. German positions held until WN 72 was hit by a bazooka. The American advance sped up, and they took out the 88 mm and more machine guns.
