~ABBY~
Chapter 1
Abigail sighed. This was the millionth time she had to go to the doctor’s office to get a “check-up”. This was the term that her mom usually used when she needed to get Abby to go to the doctor’s office.
But what her mom really meant was, “We need to get your weekly medicine for your anorexia.” You see, Abby had an eating disorder. She didn’t eat too much; it was the other way around. She ate too little and she only weighed 78 pounds, a tiny amount compared to the average weight for a seventh grade girl, 90-120 pounds.
Meanwhile, her older sister, Audrey, the perfect, golden child that their parents had always wanted, had the perfect weight for an 8th grade girl. She was also all the things that Abby was not. A varsity cheerleader; whilst Abby was always the one on the bleachers, and Audrey was also very, very popular and nice with everyone; when Abby was...well, her only friends were Allison and Fiona.
Abby was pretty sure they were only friends with her because a) Her
sister was Audrey, the famous 8th grader, or b) Her parents were rich and they owned the country’s best tech company, TechZen. Or maybe c) All of the above.
The problem was that Audrey was making all of Abby’s accomplishments seem like nothing. One very good example is the family fridge. Audrey’s ‘Student of the Year’ award covered up Abby’s ‘Perfect Attendance’ award. Whenever Abby looked at the fridge, she wanted to puke.
That wasn’t even the worst part of it! Audrey was so nice to Abby, it made Abby want to puke even more.
“Abigail Carter?” A plump head poked out from the door leading to the doctor’s office, “You’re up!”
Abby and her mom stood up, then they walked to the plump woman. She led them towards their usual doctor, Dr. Brown, an anorexia specialist doctor.
“Hey there Abby! Back for your weekly medicine, are you?” Dr. Brown said lightheartedly. Abby knew she was trying to make conversation, but
the comment weighed Abby down even more than she already was.
Abby tried to smile and said bleakly, “Yep..!” Apparently Dr. Brown didn’t notice the sarcasm, because she led them towards the patient’s room. She stopped in the hallway, where the weighing scale was.
“Come on Abby! Let’s see if you gained any weight the past week.” Dr. Brown grinned at Abby confidently. Abby moped all the way to the weighing scale. Dr. Brown’s confidence was making Abby feel worse. Why? Because Abby knew she didn’t gain a single pound, at the most she lost a few pounds. She sighed, then stepped on the weighing scale. 75 pounds, it said. Abby groaned. Why couldn’t she just... be NORMAL? Like her sister?
Both Dr. Brown and Abby’s mom kept quiet the rest of the way to the patient’s room. Abby secretly knew that they were both disappointed in her.
After Dr. Brown gave Abby’s mom her medicine prescription, Abby’s mom thanked the doctor and she and Abby walked to the front desk. “How much for Abigail Carter’s appointment?” She took out her credit
card.
“$139, please, thank you.” The front desk lady replied. Abby’s mom swiped her card. Then she took Abby’s hand and walked away without another word.
“Have a nice day!” The lady behind them said. Abby knew what her mom was angry about. It wasn’t the price of the appointment, her mom didn’t care much about prices. It was how Abby didn’t even try to improve. Even with all the yummy snacks her mom bought her or the medication, Abby was still 78 (now 75) pounds.
Her mom stormed to their Porsche with Abby close behind her (considering how they were holding hands). She unlocked the car door, opened it, and slammed the door shut. Abby went into the passenger seat. While her mom was about to get on the freeway back to their mansion, she said, “Abigail Carter. You know how bad you made me look back there? And how bad you made yourself look? Did you see the look on your doctor? She was truly disappointed in you, you know. You gotta be more blah blah blah responsibility blah more blah blah like your sister
blah blah blah...”
Abby zoned out. The truth was, she didn’t care how other people thought of her. All she wanted was to be a normal 7th grade girl. At the thought of this, Abby fell into a deep sleep.
Abby woke up to the sound of car horns blaring and crashing and people yelling. She realized that she was still in their Porsche. Abby screamed. Where is Mom? She thought, I need Mom right now!! “MOM?!! Mom, where are you?? She reached to grab her phone from the back pocket of her jeans, but it wasn’t there. She looked all around their car and found it jammed in the cupholder. She tried to pluck it out, then realized that the whole driver’s side of the car had crashed into broken metal bits, with the door broken off. And her mom was there.
Abby gasped. “M-mom? MOM?? A-are you okay? Did we get into a car accident??!” She reached for her mom, then found out that she wasn’t awake and that there was blood on her face and a wound on her side. The airbag was deployed, but it didn’t help much. Abby shrieked yet again and started to sob. “MOM!!” She finally managed to wrench her phone
out of the cupholder, and she opened the car door frantically. Well, that is, she tried to. The door, Abby realized with shock, was jammed too. She reached for her Stanley and used it to break the car window instead of trying to get out from the door. Then she crawled out through the window, with her phone in her back pocket.
She felt a stinging pain in her waist. When she managed to crawl out, she looked down and saw a bloody wound where the glass that she didn’t completely break off cut into her. She gasped for breath, for she was deathly afraid of blood, and whipped her phone out, dialing her dad’s number. “Dad??” Abby blurted frantically. “DAD?? Please don’t tell me you got hurt too...” She whispered to herself when there was no answer.
“What’s up, Itty Bitty?” Her dad said cheerfully. Abby groaned.
“Dad, please don’t use my pet name. I’m in SEVENTH grade! Also, t-this is not a great time for joking a-around.” Abby said gravelly.
“What do you mean?” His voice suddenly becomes serious.
“M-m-mom got into a car accident when w-we were on the f-freeway coming back from t-the h-h-hospital.” Abby hiccuped. She knew that the
car accident was probably her fault, anyways. She was the one who got her mom angry.
“WHAT? Abby, tell me where you are right now and I’ll stop my work to go there, okay?” Her dad said.
“Okay o-okay, u-u-um, it’s...” Abby looked around. “I-it’s the freeway t-that we always see when w-we go to that sushi restaurant. L-like, what is it called, T-The Sushi Roll?”
“Okay, I’m on my way. Try to take care of yourself and your mom as best as you can, alright?” He said, then he ended the call.
Okay Abigail Carter, you got to take care of yourself. She thought. My wound... Abby looked around for any roll of paper to cover it with. I should’ve studied doctor stuff... all the doctor stuff I know is from watching tv. After some thinking, she decided to just press her hand on her wound to stop the bleeding.
Abby tried to stagger to the broken car. Must. Take. Care. Of. Mom. Halfway to the car, she fainted from the blood loss. The last thing she saw was her dad’s light blue Lincoln heading towards them.
~AUDREY~
Chapter 2-
Audrey bit her nails the whole way to the car accident. The worst part was that both her mom AND her little Itty Bitty was in it. This was exactly the type of thing Audrey was afraid of. Well, not that anyone knew, but Audrey liked it when nobody knew her deepest fears. She liked how little kids looked up to her and how she was Miss Popular and Miss Pretty.
But what nobody knew was that Audrey had the same fears as the regular human. She was afraid of not being perfect, not being popular. The thing she was most afraid of was everybody realizing that she was just... Audrey. AND she was scared of everybody knowing that she had thanatophobia, or death anxiety. She was really afraid of her loved ones getting hurt or dying.
“Are you sure Abby’s doing fine?” She mumbled nervously. Her dad didn’t answer. He was in his own mountain of problems. Audrey decided
to keep to herself the rest of the ride.
The Lincoln finally stopped at what seemed like the biggest car accident on Earth. And their Porsche was right in the middle of all the drama. Well, it didn’t really look like their Porsche anymore. All it looked like was a big piece of battered up metal. Audrey’s attention caught onto her sister, lying on the ground. There was a small puddle of blood surrounding her.
“Dad, I see Abby!” Audrey pointed. They ran to the car, dodging everybody. Now that Audrey had a much closer view, she could see that her mom seemed to be in much worse condition than Abby. Nevertheless, she still ran towards Abby.
“Itty? Are you okay? Please tell me you’re okay!!” Audrey shook Abby’s motionless body. Then she gasped. There was a small wound on her side. “DAD! Y-you need to come here! Abby’s hurt!” Audrey looked at her own hands. They were now covered in Abby’s blood.
No, no, no, this was not happening, not her biggest nightmare! It was coming true right before her eyes. Audrey tried to calm herself down, to
remind her that she needed to be strong for her family. She struggled to catch her breath. Sometimes...sometimes, it hurts to be strong.
~ABBY~
Chapter 3
The first thing Abby saw when she opened her eyes was her sister biting her nails. It was one of the only bad habits she had. She only did this once in a while, only when she was really nervous and freaked out.
“Sis?” Abby murmured, reaching for Audrey’s hand. She usually did NOT do this, but this is not usually.
“Itty? You’re AWAKE!! OhmygodIwassoscaredthatyouweren’tgonnawakeupbutnowyou’refine!” Audrey gasped for breath, looking ecstatic, “Thank the Lord!”
Abby squeezed Audrey’s hand. “W-where’s Mom? Is s-she okay? Are we in the hospital?”
Audrey’s look of joy faded. “Yeah, we’re in the hospital that you and Mom usually go to for your appointments. But for mom...” She sighed, “We don’t know yet. The doctors said that they’ll be getting back with us
soon.”
Abby sighed dejectedly. This was all her fault. If only she had tried to be a better daughter. Like AUDREY. One look at her and you’ll know that she’s the golden child. With that bitter thought, she lifted the hospital blanket over her head and tried to drift to sleep.
Abigail woke up to yelling. Someone’s yelling, who’s voice seemed quite familiar. She looked to the right, expecting to see Audrey in the visitor chair. She wasn’t there. The door to the hospital hallway was slightly ajar. Abby knew she wasn’t supposed to get up, but she couldn’t help it. She wanted to know what was going on outside. Abby creeped out of the bed silently, towards the door. She opened it just a bit more to see the drama.
“Are you KIDDING me? 4 weeks?! D-don’t you have some advanced t-technology to cure people quickly? My parents d-don’t spend all their i-insurance money on nothing! Oh, and d-did I mention that my p-parents literally FOUNDED T-TechZen??!” Abby gasped when she saw who said that. It was Audrey, the Miss Perfect and Miss Nice and Miss No-Yelling Ever! “I could fire each and every one of you guys.” She pointed to the
