A very long time ago in a not so far away
place, when the United States of America
was still being formed, a famous leader
named Andrew Jackson wrote a very
important paper. This paper was going to
separate the Americans and Native
Americans from ever talking to each other
again. This could only happen if both the
Americans and the Native Americans agreed.
The Americans offered 5 million dollars for the
land the Native Americans owned because it was
more usable.

When the paper was getting signed in the month of
December, 1885, about 500 people showed up. On
May 23, the next year, the paper won by only one vote.

It was because of this one vote that the Native
Americans got kicked out of their homeland
and were forced to move to land that was not as
usable. This event was called The Trail of Tears
because it was very sad for all the Native
Americans. It was very bad because they only got
to bring a few of their things with them. The Native
American children could not bring any of their toys
and only a few clothes.

They walked many miles and it took many
months to get all the way to the other land.
Many people got hurt and passed away. Most
of the Native Americans did not understand
what was happening and some never even found
out. Lots of kids had no mom or dad and had
aunts, uncles or other relatives take care of them.
Some of the Native Americans only left because of
the money, other Native Americans stayed to fight
for the land they wanted back.

After many years, the land that the Native
Americans moved to got smaller and smaller
until there was almost nothing. Some of the
American leaders even felt sorry for the Native
Americans and their struggles. A lot of the Native
Americans had walked the long journey barefoot
and had no blankets.
