Table of Contents

A is for Air Pollution
Air pollution occurs when gases, dust particles, or smoke
are introduced into the atmosphere in a way that makes
it harmful to humans, animals and plants.
This is because the air becomes contaminated (dirty or unclean).

Cars produce more air pollution
than any other single human activity.

B is for
Biodegradable
Some things we throw
away, like banana peels
and egg shells,
can become food for
plants and animals over
time. But other
things we throw away,
like bottles and juice
boxes, cannot.
The things that can be
absorbed by our soil are
all biodegradable.

C is for Climate
Climate is the average weather in a place over many years.
While the weather can change in just a few hours, climate takes
hundreds, thousands, even millions of years to change.
The average climate around the world is called global climate.

D is for Deforestation
Deforestation is when humans remove or clear large areas of forest
lands and related ecosystems for non-forest use. Trees help us breathe
by producing oxygen, so without trees there would be less oxygen!
Cutting down trees also forces many animals to leave their homes.

E is for Environment
Your environment is where you live. Your house, your school,
your city, state, country: all of these are a part of your environment.
In fact, the entire world is your environment. We can help protect the
environment by not polluting and picking up litter.

F is for Farming
Farmed areas – both on land and in water – provide important
habitats for many plants and animals. Sometimes farming can harm
the homes of many animals and damage our soil. However,
organic farming is good because farmers grow their food in a way
that does not hurt people or animals.

G is for Global Warming
Global warming means that the Earth's climate is getting hotter
much faster than it should. One reason it is getting hotter is because
of pollution. Global warming has made it hard for animals in the
Arctic to live because it melts the ice.

H is for Habitat
A habitat is a place
where an animal lives.
It provides the animal
with food, water and
shelter. There are many
different sorts of habitats
around the world from forests
to grasslands and from
mountain slopes
to deserts. Sadly, people
are causing many
habitats around the
world to disappear.

I is for Ice
Many years ago, much of Earth was covered in ice. Nowadays, the
only ice sheets on Earth are found in Antarctica and Greenland.
Global warming is making the waters warmer which is causing the
ice sheets to melt faster than usual. This is harmful to wildlife in
these regions, like polar bears, who use the ice to stand on and hunt.

J is for Jaguar
Jaguars live in rain forests, swamps, grasslands, forests, and deserts.
Most have orange-brown fur with black spots but some are all black.
Logging, mining, and farming have left less food and habitat for jaguars,
causing them to become endangered.

K is for Koala
Koalas may look like
bears, but they are not!
Koalas are actually
marsupials. They carry
their babies (called joeys)
in pouches when they are
young, just like
kangaroos.
Koalas live in Australia.
Although they are not
endangered, many
people have destroyed
the eucalyptus trees that
they like to eat. This
makes it very hard for
them to survive.

Koalas eat a little bit of dirt
every so often - it helps their
stomach digest eucalyptus leaves!

L is for Litter
Litter is trash that has not been disposed of properly. Trash that has been
thrown on the side of the road or in a lake instead of in a trash can is litter.
Litter is harmful to the environment - it can ruin the quality of water, cause
health problems and hurt animals and wildlife.

M is for Manatee
Manatees are gentle, slow-moving water mammals sometimes known as sea
cows. Manatees live in shallow, calm rivers, bays, canals and coastal areas.
They are endangered now because many people used to hunt them.

Manatees are distant
relatives of elephants
and share similar traits.

N is for Natural Resources
Natural resources are things we can use that are provided to us by the Earth.
Some natural resources include air, water, soil, plants, animals, wind,
the sun and land. We can use the Earth's natural resources at home by
reusing bags, composting and growing our own fruits and vegetables.

O is for Ocean
Oceans contain almost 98 percent of all the water on Earth. The five oceans
on Earth are the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian, the Arctic and the Southern.
Many people depend on the ocean for food, water and even work so we need
to protect our oceans by not polluting and cleaning up litter.

P is for Polar Bear
Polar bears live in a place called the Arctic.
They are big, powerful white bears. Polar bears are endangered.
They need ice to hunt seals, and the sea ice is slowly melting away.
This is caused by global warming.

Polar bears have black
skin to absorb heat and
white fur to blend in
with their environment.
