Freddie fish was so excited to have his
first day at his new school. He had just
moved in with his new family and was
finally ready to start school.
His mom wished him luck as he swam
off to school.

When Freddie got in his class, Mr. Crab
introduced him to the other students and
he found an open spot next to Sally
seahorse.
"Alright class," said Mr. Crab, "Lets talk
about our class project!"
"A project," thought Freddie, "I wonder
what it will be?"

Mr. Crab said "We will be making collages of
our family tree. Please use pictures of grand
parents and parents, siblings and cousins, to
show the class your family. Also add things
that are important to your families culture like
objects, recipes, clothes, and other things that
are important to you."
Freddie felt confused. He came from a
different background than his parents did but
they were still a family. He thought about his
new family and they did look very different
from him.

"What does a family mean to you?"
Freddie asked Sally.
"To be a family you have to be the
same and there is mom and a dad," she
chuckled, "If you don't look like your
parents then they aren't really yours."
Freddie didn't know what to think.

Freddie was so upset he rushed home. He
swam so fast he knocked right into Pete
the puffer fish who puffed all the way up!
Freddie didn't even stop and apologize. He
needed to talk to his mom.

"Mom! Dad! I have a project to do and I
don't think I can do it," he yelled.
"What do you mean son," his dad
asked.
"Well it's a family project but your not
my real family. How can I do it if I don't
have real parents," he shouted as he
cried.
