Charlotte jumped down the bus steps and ran down the
sidewalk to her house. She was so excited to get home and
play with her dog in the backyard since it was such a nice
day outside.

She threw open the door, "Mommy, Daddy, Puppy,
I'm home!"
Charlotte's mom and dad were in the living room
with sad looks on their faces.
"Where's Puppy?" asked Charlotte.

"Well," Mommy said, "He went to heaven."
Charlotte thought for a second and then asked, "What
does that mean?"
"Every day people go to heaven, and those people need
dogs, cats, and goldfish to watch and play too, so that's
why they have to leave," explained Daddy.

"But why did Puppy have to go?
Couldn't another dog go instead of
mine?" asked Charlotte.

Her dad cleared his throat and said, "Sometimes animals
and humans go because they're sick or because they
have been here for long enough and it's time for them
to go to a place where they won't ever be sad, sick, or
hurt."

Charlotte's mom gave her a hug. "Don't worry darling,"
her mom said, rubbing her back, "We will miss Puppy
too, but right now he's running and playing. The
memories you have with Puppy won't go away and we'll
always remember him."

Charlotte nodded but she was still sad. "Come out to the
backyard with us," mom said, "we want to give Puppy
his toys and bones."

In the backyard
beneath the tree that
Puppy always laid
under was a hole in
the ground that held
a shoe box. Charlotte
put his favorite
blankets, bones, and
toys in the hole. Then
her dad put dirt over
top.

Charlotte's mom put flowers on top. Her parents
gave her a hug and then went inside. Charlotte
looked at the dirt and smiled as she thought about
Puppy.
