Chapter 1 

The New Castle

Mr. Otis, an American, buys an old castle called Canterville Castle, even though people tell him it has a ghost! He isn’t scared and jokes that if there really was a ghost, Americans would have one in a museum.

When Mr. Otis's family arrives at the castle, the sky darkens and it feels creepy. They meet the housekeeper, Mrs. Umney, who shows them around the house. They find a strange red stain on the floor that, according to Mrs. Umney, is blood from a ghost. Even though they don't believe it, they clean it up, causing a storm.

Chapter 1 

A Noisy Visitor

The red stain appears again the next morning! Then, that night, Mr. Otis hears clanking sounds in the hallway. When he opens the door, he sees a ghost with chains! Instead of being scared, Mr. Otis offers him oil for his noisy chains. Shocked, the ghost vanishes.

Chapter 3

Stilly Stain

The stain keeps coming back in different colors. The Otis family jokes about it, but Virginia, the daughter, feels sad when she sees it. The ghost tries to scare them again by making a suit of armor fall. But the twins just laugh and throw things at him! Embarrassed, the ghost disappears.
