This book is dedicated to my one and only daughter, Jordin. I never knew true love until you came into my life, I'm so proud of you and the young lady you are becoming.

On a chilly Friday, November 9 in 1923 a little girl by the name of Alice Coachman was born in Albany, Georgia. Alice was the 5th child born to Fred and Evelyn Coachman.

At a young age, Alice would pick cotton, plums, pecans, and corn to help the family business.

In 1938 Coachman enrolled into Madison High School and quickly joined the track team.

Coach Lash noticed Coachman's talent. Later in 1939, she found herself the center of attention at Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama.
Coachman collected a number of AAU national titles in her senior year of high school for the 50 meter dash and high jump.

Coachman was to compete in the Olympics but World War II forced the Olympic Games to be cancelled.
She was the only black girl on each of the five all-american teams she played on.
She graduated in 1946 with a dressmaking degree from Tuskegee and later received her Bachelor's degree from Albany State University in home economics.
