Once upon a time, in a world far, far away, where people had wacky skin colors. There was a girl, with a secret superpower. She had rainbow skin and could change it any color she wanted.
Her name was Opal, and she was the only one in the whole world with her power. She loved it because of all the people she got to meet. You see, in this world, everyone only hung out with people of the same color.

One of the biggest dividers in this world was what people ate. For example, people with green skin ate spinach, avocados, and broccoli. Red-skinned people ate strawberries, apples, and raspberries.
No one had ever thought of trying anything that belonged to another color. They didn't hate each other, they just had their own way of life, but not Opal.

Nor her parents or doctors could explain why she was different, she just was. Her power puzzled even the brightest minds.
Her mom Violet and her dad Indigo were purple. So, they simply couldn't figure it out.
Her parents were especially worried because they didn't know what to feed her. To their surprise, she was able to eat anything she wanted.

By the time Opal started school, she was able to control her power more or less. On her first day of school, her parents' words rang in her head: "No matter what color your skin is, sweetie, you have to hang out with those who are like you, ok?"
However, as she made more and more friends, she grew a bit sad that she couldn't hang out with all of them together. Especially knowing how alike they all were.

As the years went on, Opal got used to her strange life. She even was able to change her skin on command. She knew her parents were unsettled by her power so she never brought it up and stayed purple around the house. She kinda liked keeping a secret.
But not being able to talk to anyone about it weighed heavy on her. All she wanted was to be herself and still have her friends.

She wanted Neel to meet Alani, Opal knew how much they both loved drawing. Then, there was Ruby and Jade who were both obsessed with soccer.
When she tried to talk to her parents about it they forbade her from introducing them saying, "No one would understand honey." When she asked why her mom said, "It's just how the world is".

Opal's mother's words stuck with her and bothered her a lot. She couldn't stop thinking "why". Why was the world this way? Why couldn't she be happy with all her friends? Why was she born the way she was? And most of all, why can't she simply be herself?
Opal's head began to spin with all these questions, and something happened that hadn't happened in years.

Opal's skin had turned rainbow.
Opal panicked as she looked in the mirror. Her fear got even worse when she realized she couldn't change her skin any other color anymore.
She began crying, so loudly that her parents came running to her room. "Oh my goodness, what happened?" her mother exclaimed.
"I-I-I don't know" Opal sobbed in reply.

Opal refused to go outside, unable to face her friends and the world.
As time went on, Opal's friends got worried and one by one decided to go see her.
Two of her friends, Daffodil who was yellow and Fuchsia who was purple had decided to go on the same day. At Opal's doorstep, they looked at each other with utter confusion.
