To All Those Who are Worried About the Future
¨It all comes down to this:
In our imperfect world
We are meant to repair
And stitch together
What beauty is ¨
~ Stuart Kestenbaum, ¨Holding the Light¨

Cocoa Capybara knew trouble was afoot when Tina Toucan burst into their house.
“Cocoa! Cocoa! Something bad is happening in the rainforest!”
Cocoa raised an eyebrow. Tina had a habit of making everything seem much worse than it was.

The rainforest was stunning. The sun shone bright, and the morning's fresh dew glistened in the light. It seemed impossible for anything bad to happen that day.
"What happened, Tina?" Cocoa inquired.

"There's talk going around the rainforest to get rid of my favorite food! Crickets!" Tina exclaimed in fear.
"What?!" Cocoa cried, "How could this happen?"
Tina slumped down in a chair. "It's not fair. I'm scared of what will happen. Why should I be treated differently?"

"You shouldn't be," Cocoa stated, "Every animal matters."
Tina sighed.
Cocoa asked, "What are you going to do about your food situation?"
Tina sighed again. "I guess just do as I'm told. I have to listen to the rules."

Cocoa shook their head. "If you're not going to do anything, then I will!"
"Cocoa!" Tina gasped. "You can't! You'll break the rules!"
"Not if I do it right. I'll see you soon, Tina. I have to get to work!"

"On what?!" Tina exclaimed, "I don't want you in trouble!"
"I promise I won't." With that, Cocoa started their project.

Cocoa worked on into the night.
The next morning was cloudy, and a light drizzle had graced the rainforest.
With a start, Cocoa heard a knock at the door. It was their friend, Tommy Tapir.

"Cocoa! Cocoa! Did you hear the news?" Tommy shouted.
"What happened?" Cocoa asked.
"There are talks to stop the rain forever! I need the water for my bath!"
Cocoa shook their head. "I can't believe it! Every aspect of our ecosystem matters!"

Tommy sadly shook his head. "I don't want to bother you. Besides this might be my last chance to take a bath."
Cocoa stopped their friend before he headed out and asked, "Aren't you going to do anything to keep the rain?"
"What can I do?" Tommy wondered.

"I've started something, don't worry!" Cocoa exclaimed.
"Something to start rain? Sounds dangerous. I don't want you hurt."
"I promise I won't." With that, Cocoa watched the shadow of the tapir disappear into what could have been one of the final rainfalls. The capybara's work was far from over.
.

Cocoa worked even more diligently than before. Tina's food and Tommy's baths depended on the capybara.
Dark clouds swarmed around the rainforest the next morning, and Cocoa could feel a storm brewing.
There was a knock at the door. This time, it was both Tina and Tommy. "I don't want you to get in trouble," Tina stated.
"And I don't want you to get hurt," Tommy added.

The two explained to Cocoa that they had met up and talked about the capybara's efforts.
"We can't live without crickets or baths, but we also can't live without you. We don't want you to be sad because of us," Tina said.
"I promise I won't," Cocoa assured.
